What model car is the petrol, and what model is the diesel!
I wouldn't want to be stuck in a second hand Jappa import diesel car from one of the second tier companies as they're almost all hilariously underpowered.

as a rental car, diesel - the fuel consumption is alot less than the petrols, and you aren't burdened with the ruc and rego costs :)

You can't be sure on that without knowing what the vehicle is. My old terrano had worse fuel consumption than my 323.
You might still end up paying less in terms of fuel costs because diesel is cheaper though. However the other costs associated with a diesel cancel that out to some degree. I'm sure rental companies won't be covering the RUC's and higher rego out of the goodness of their heart - you'll be paying for it somewhere along the line!
