What oil to use in AU falcon 4.0L

skyline_guy_r34, May 19, 12:14am
Book recommends 5/30. Car has done 199kms, and it is used for towing 1500kgs 1 one weekend every month. No leaks anywhere, Not sure what oil is in it at the moment, all I know is its 2 years old. Is there any good weight of oil I should look at using! can only find fully synthetics in 5/30. Would be happy if theres a magic oil for these engines that is under $50 for 5 litres. Cheers

10w-30

Use Castrol Magnatec, I've been using it in mine for years, it's also what a lot of Ford Dealers use.

the 15/40! Thats a few weights difference than 5/30. And thats a bugger as its 4 litres and I need 5. Ill wait for fish to come in hopefully that'll support someones answer.

To be honest, in an AU that's done 200k, I wouldn't worry too much. As long as you keep changing what ever you use.

What ever is on special usually works for me, normally 15/30 or 15/40 from memory.

Super cheap had a special on 10L packs a while back. which got me sorted.

Yeah I would have guess generic brand 15-40 based on the age. They're not an especially picky engine are they! Fairly low strung and all that.

Happy to be corrected.

I think you should go for a 10 or 15w-40 considering the mileage. The 40 weight should be ok and yeah I don't think they are a picky engine. I use Amsoil 5W-40 full synthetic in my BF XR6 and swear by it.

All suitable, under $50 and come in a 5L pack or more:)

Perfect mine has 199kms too and I wanted to know this too.

Penrite HPR15 works great. I use it in my 5L.

jasongroves, May 19, 7:58am
Out of interest, why do you suggest fully synthetic!

jasongroves, May 19, 8:06am
Theres plenty of suitable semi-synthetics available for cheaper:

This would be my pick for the price if going for a semi-syn:

That Valvoline oil is good as per jasongrooves, 5 litrefor under 40 buck. Handy for top ups as well and cheap but good quality. Semi synthetic is fine.

chris_051, May 19, 6:28pm
Why waste your time on synthetic oil in a 200k/10 year old car.
I use Valvoline 10litre trade packs from supercheap, $45. 10w 50. Change it every 5k, never misses a beat.

clark20, May 19, 7:22pm
Just out of interest I wait for a Supercheap special and get Castrol Edge 5-30W for $50 for 5L (I need 8.4L so I get 2)

One of the worst things with synthethic oil on old cars is that if it gets down the valve stems it burns on the valve, but it stays there, a lesser oil would burn off nearly completely, and starts build up that can only usually be removed manually.

I wouldn't use a full synthetic with those km's. Just use any generic mineral oil.

skyline_guy_r34, May 19, 9:09pm
Had a horrible experience using Engine armour 10-30 and then 10-40 in the ls1 I had previously. Put it down to being a picky engine. I GUESS I could try it again. Does towing affect which weight oil to use! Might pop in and grab that 5L 10-40 semi synthetic engine armour.

fordfan62, May 20, 9:08am
Valvoline 15/40 in 5ltr packs usually $40-50 at supersheep or ripco.

its an au use cheap oil, save your money for all the repairs to balljoints, brakes, radiator fan motors, power steering leak repairs and a new alt, radiator, and then more top and bottom ball joints,
as this model ate them,
I still have brand new ones in the garageshelf left over from servicing taxis ,
good luck
