My ute has now decided it does not like long up hills. No problem keeping up the speed but the temp goes through the roof. Coming up the Bombay hills both ways, Never done this before. Any ideas on where to start looking. Thanx in advance.

radiator hoses first then thermostat then heater core then tk test the cooling system then get a mitsubishi ;}

Check between the aircon condensor and the radiator, betcha it's blocked full of leaves etc, the cooling system on these is barely up to the job and needs to be kept well serviced, check the radiator isn't blocked as well.

henderson_guy, Feb 10, 2:50am
I would start by getting the radiator core rodded out by a radiator specialist.when it is blocked, flushing does nothing to fix it. Should be ~$100 to get this done, if you can remove and refit the radiator yourself.

kingfisher21, Feb 10, 2:54am
Check between the two radiators like I said FIRST, there is a rubber flap at the top, lift it up and look down with a torch, it's the MOST COMMON fault with these.

These vehicles have radiators with very thin tubes, so that will need to be removed and rodded out. And, do not use silicone based antifreeze as it will just turn to jelly and sit at the bottom of the radiator tank and cripple the water flow. But, like already mentioned, make sure it's externally clean first.
Also, WL-T series engines don't like to be overheated, so get a TK head check done by the garage. They are well known to crack heads, but easily replaced (compared to most other turbo diesels).

Thanx guys. Seems I have some work to do tomorrow. Question What is a tk head check!

My understanding is that Isocyanate-free 2K (two-component) paint is a type of automotive paint that does not contain isocyanates, which are harmful chemicals that can cause serious health problems if inhaled. Isocyanates are commonly used in 2K paint as a hardener, but their use can result in respiratory issues and skin irritation for workers who come into contact with the paint.

Isocyanate-free 2K paint is a safer alternative that can reduce the risk of these health problems, while still providing high-quality, durable paint finishes. This type of paint typically uses a different type of hardener that does not contain isocyanates, such as a urethane hardener.

Isocyanate-free 2K paint can be used for a range of automotive applications, including on cars, trucks, buses, and other vehicles. It provides a high-gloss, long-lasting finish that is resistant to weather, UV rays, and other environmental factors.

If you are considering using isocyanate-free 2K paint, it is important to ensure that it is applied by a skilled and experienced professional, as this type of paint requires specific mixing and application techniques to achieve the desired results. Additionally, proper ventilation and personal protective equipment should be used to prevent exposure to any harmful chemicals that may be present in the paint.

Chocolate fish for you! I did not realize there were 2 radiators so with a quick glance the front and back are clear. BUT now when I look between them it is a different story, everything including a bird.

It's a chemical reaction type test that's used on the cooling system to see if you have any combustion gases present in the system, ie. blown head gasket or cracked head.

1 radiator will be the intercooler

intrade, Feb 10, 8:02am
or the aircon radiator. ps that ford is a mazda also and no ford

bobinnz, Feb 10, 8:03am
I presume this is a better(more accurate) test than looking at the oil for a grey colour or checking the coolant for oil!

intrade, Feb 10, 8:07am
yes take out thermostat flush system add tk fluid and run it to see what colour it turns if its got combustion gas color then you got a blowen headgasket or craked head if its fine then you got to start with replacing waterpump thermostat and radiator.

mugenb20b, Feb 10, 8:08am
Can be, but you'd check everything you can before you start ripping the head off. Although, a diesel, which is a high compression engine, doesn't always need a TK check done to confirm head gasket problems. Usually, there'll be a geyser coming through the radiator neck and a rapid loss of water.

mugenb20b, Feb 10, 8:17am
I had an old Nissan Terrano diesel towed in today. Earlier in the day, it blew a heater hose and overheated. The owner replaced it thinking all was good, when 10 minutes down the road, he blew a top radiator hose. No problem, he gets me to change it after he towed it, and I knew then exactly what the issue was. So, as requested, I replaced the hose, opened the cap and filled it with water, started the engine and whoosh, instant geyser display, lost a gallon of water in seconds. "Sorry buddy, time for a new car."

Op--NOW is the time to stop driving the ute and get it checked out.
I bet the rad is blocked up.
personal experience (well actually my dad) of just doing the simple stuff resulted in a 3.5k repair bill.
DEFINITELY make sure the rad is clean and flowing water

bobinnz, Feb 11, 7:31am
Sorry but that would be my last choice, maybe even lower than a great wall.

skin1235, Feb 11, 8:28am
bet ya if he slips the rad bolts out and gets busy with an air gun, he'll have no more issues until it gets clogged up again

head gaskets don't wait for hills before they dump the water, his one waits for a long hill before showing symptoms
ie dust, dirt, thistle down ( and even a bird) will do that though

kazbanz, Feb 11, 8:30am
oops--yep I did ,miss that post

bobinnz, Feb 12, 3:01am
You guys are the best! Now for a test run on the weekend. Will let you know next week as truck does not get used until the weekend again.

bobinnz, Feb 26, 9:33am
Sorry guys the clean outdid not fix. Did not overheat on the Bombays but did on the Kaimais. Not sure if we had ac on for Bombays did for Kaimais . Just before the temp starts to climb we get a smell of burning hair. Any other ideas! Before I strip out the radiator and Thermostat.

Sounds like time for a new motor/ute.

figjam999, Feb 26, 10:26am
Had the same problem in my work courier, turned out the fins on the water pump had worn down to next to nothing

snj11, Feb 26, 6:50pm
Dealt with MANY of these, take radiator out and take it to a radiator shop to be properly rodded out, should cost around $100 - $150 if you take it out yourself. Should fix your problem if the blocked radiator hasnt already donemore damage, but if its only getting hot on hills you should be safe.

kazbanz, Feb 26, 7:27pm
Ok bob. I go back to my first post. Clean out the radiator. Its a VERY common cause of issues with those. Not so common but I have heard of water pumps wearing down.
I sont for a second want to seem to be gloating because I'm not. BUT again look the longer you carry on driving with an issue the greater the risk of a warped head which is pretty expensive
Incidently My dad ran all the right antifreezebut made the mistake of using bore water which was too hard for the ally of the rad
