Auto gearbox problem

Any advice on this issue would be appreciated. I purchased a 92 960 Volvo off Trademe recently and the main issue with the car is that the radiator had developed a leak, which has let water into the auto trans cooler. The radiator is now fixed. The auto has been flushed and has new fluid. The auto works as it should and all gears are there etc, but the issue is it lurches through the change. It is ok when cold and the changes are smoother if you have plenty of power on, but driving quietly round town it is rather annoying. Any suggestions on what needs to be replaced and a rough idea of cost would be helpful, i.e would a replacement box be the better option etc! Thanks.

I know you think this is not helpful but get rid of it, its an old volvo and that is a problem in itself. Either that or keep driving it til it fails.

has the transmission filter been replaced inside the transmission!

Not entirely sure actually. The Volvo agent in Palmy had the car just after I purchased it to sort out the auto fault and all they did was drain, flush and refill the transmission. They didn't even establish why the auto fluid was brown sludge. A day or two later amate n I found that there was trans fluid in the water , so I took the vehicle to our local garage to get the radiator/trans cooler repaired. The system was flushed and refilled, but again I am unsure if the filter was changed as there is no mention on the accounts.

If it has had water in it it is F****d the water attacks the bonding of the clutch plate linings they then fall off!

So why is it F.can't you just replace clutch packs!

drop the sump water goes to lowest point . and get it done propper this time you can do it your selfwill cost about 260$ trans filters are 25 to 50$ gasket for trans sump is 10 to 20$ and then you need engine degreaser to wash clean the transmission sump . Remember electrical faults you go to auto electrition
automatic trans fault you go to automatic trans rebuild places for service for a good rule to remember

its rwd be easy as to change transmission for another one.

Sure it can be repaired but would be worth more than the vehicle in all likely hood!

Hey look I dont think you have a serios problem,, a bit of that sludge that you get when you put water with oil is stuck somwhere in the valve body,, lurching through gears is not really the clutch packs, I think it could come right in time and possibly even another fluid change at some stage might help,, make sure it has got plenty of fluid in it and check it with the engine running. Next time you change the fluid either clean or replace the filter and just do the job yourself.

Cheers, may just do that.

You would also assume that taking a volvo to the volvo agent who supposedly have specialised knowledge and equipment would be a wise choice, when the problem had not been identified, merely the symptom
