Mitsubishi Outlander Transmission

Has anyone else had issues with their Outlander transmission! There was a noise that nearly two years ago at annual service my husband asked the Mitsi service people to investigate. They couldn't find anything. He asked again last year and still they couldn't find anything. Today he went to them and took them for a drive and yes they could hear what he wanted checked.

Well they now tell us it is the transmission - so we are probably going to look at big $ to fix. Of course the question is could we have been saved this grief if they had checked it properly nearly two years ago. it is a Nov 2006 model so no it is not covered by Mitsi.

2.4 with the CVT or 3.0 with the tiptronic! 2WD or 4WD!

4WD - 2.4 CVT

cvt- more trouble than they're worth

well if it still drives but with a noise it will probably be a bearing/bushing or something which could be replaced/repaired that doesn't require a full overhaul or transmission replacement. Best to get it checked out by a transmission specialist.

also how many kms has it covered! How many kms were showing when the noise first occured!

Approximately 50,000kms when we first noticed the noise.

I am assuming here you bought it from the dealer! That being the case I would say there might be opportunity for some recourse under the consumer guarantees act.

Again making assumptions but it sounds like you may have noticed it quite soon after buying the vehicle!

If all the above is correct I would say give it a go. The only trouble would be proving that you had indeed told them about the noise 2 years ago.

Hope that helps.

Well we have been quoted $4,000 for a repair and $6000 to replace. Ouch. And of course we wonder what experience the Mitsi service people have to do this dort of repair! It might even pay us to go to a specialist and be sure it is done properly.

rai5, What was the outcome of this! We have an Outlander with CVT at 77,000 kms. No problems so far - touch wood.

Talk to Kaspa and Gearbox Factory and see how much they will charge you.

Why for the sake of it would you own a CVT not only are they gutless on take off but they end up costing thousands when they need to be fixed even if it is just something minor and the transmission fluid cost at least $200 for a couple of litres when normal transmission fluid is around $15 to $25 dollars for a couple of litres. I know this because I once owned one. Never again when mine broke I got quoted $3500 to fix a tiny part

Because:

* A properly designed one with an external filter that is maintained properly will last just fine.

* They only "feel" sluggish, if you put a regular automatic in the same car 0 - 100 times will actually be slower.

* The cost of transmission fluid is well offset by the fuel savings offered by the CVT.

The better question IMO is why would anyone buy one that dosn't have a separate filter and service history. Its a shame a good technology is ruined by some poor designs and consumers who neglect to maintain their vehicles.
