Accent cambelt question.

brapbrappy, Sep 16, 10:58pm
Daughter's 2000 Accent done about 100,000km getting quotes for a Cambelt replacement.I know its recommended to do other jobs at the same time such as tensioner and drive belts but how necessary is it to replace the waterpump. as that will entail an extra $150 forreplacement pump and coolant. From what I have read Accents arent hard on waterpumps and there is not much of a need to replace them. Would just replacing the seals in the pump be enough!

you cant replace no seals on a waterpump. they are all one unit throw away component since at least 30 years now

just to the belt, if your happy enough to pay many times more than $150 for a pump if it does fail in the future.

find out if the waterpump is actuarly driven by the cambelt, if it is driven then its a must replace part if not you can skip at at your own risk.
post your numberplate or look it up on carjam.co.nz and post the details engine number.

12 years old. crazy if you dont!

Its not driven by the cambelt.

it wont be "Many more times than $150"thats just scaremongering which is typical of many garages once they see a young woman . And if she's a bit short of money right now she could delay it.However teach her to regularly check the water temp gauge just in case it fails in the future. Could save her engine. But if she can afford it, get it done.

dont agree. 12 years a long time! things perish.

intrade, Sep 16, 11:43pm
yes they do but if you want to wind every last bit out of a part then you can with taking a risk, 150 is cheap however for doing coolant and pump you would want to check if the pump you pay for was done should benew and shiny , usually best if you can actuarlly fully trust the machanic you use to start with. also keep in mind doing the pump afterwards could cost more money as parts of the engine have to be stripped down all over like fanbelts and plastic covers etc.

there is a furter option for cheapskates , if the engine is a non interfearance one, you can drive till the cambelt is broken and then have the AA tow the car to a garage to have it all done at once. if its interfearance then you should not take a Gamble as it would cost more then the caris worth to fix after.

somewhat agree but if the pumps behind the cam belt, or changing the pump requires the removal of the cam belt, it IS going to cost far more than the $150 it will cost to do it at the same time as the belt

kcc55a, Sep 17, 12:28am
Sure but I bet you dont immediately replace everything a mechanic tells you to just because they tell you

fordkiwi27, Sep 17, 12:32am
nope. but after 12 years for piece of mind motoring i sure would.

and if you want a second opinion,go and see eddie at all fleet services in wingate. he will see you right,

Ya the replacement of water pump at cam belt time is not about whether or not it's driven by the belt, it's about the fact you usually have to take off all the same stuff to get to it. SO you're paying next to nix for labour (to replace the pump) as opposed to several hours labour.
