Race car transport

I'm at the stage in my life where I wouldn't mind doing something other than going to work and playing with the kids. I live in central-ish Auckland and parking is a premium.

I would like to get into some form of motorsport, and think I would like to commit to more than the 2k cup, probably Honda Cup or the BMW/Alfa series. Mainly to have more fidling ability and a 'proper' race car.

How do other people do it though, if I brought a race car and trailer, I would need a new car to tow (current daily drive a Golf R32).

Do the towing companies or someone similar offer a pick up/drop off service to places like Hampton Downs etc? Or do I have to buy a trailer/tow car/house in Henderson with qtr-acre section to store it all?

Maybe you could get into a syndicate of owners? Or rent a storage area or part of a warehouse? Hire a trailer for race days? Find a team looking for a driver. Plenty of options.

Have you considered karting?
Not so far to the Auckland tracks. Still has the data logging technical side if you wish to compete at that level. Maybe more family orientated than some other forms of motorsport.
http://www.kartsport.org.nz/about-us/clubs/kartsport-auckland Less space to store vehicle etc. For the larger vehicles the place to start is a car club to go through the licence process necessary for Honda Cups etc. e.g http://aucklandcarclub.com/ http://www.motorsport.org.nz/ (licences etc)
The car preparation businesses do prepare, store and transport cars at a cost to their customers.

Thanks for the comments. Dunno about karting, but yes would be an easier option.

Alfa, BMW etc gives you extra race options such as also being eligible for the AES/Arrow Wheels ERC Series. These are classes for road-going cars with an option to trailer if you wish.

Trailer hire is not normally a viable economic option. Buying one might be. You can leave the car on the trailer, so you only need one extra car space.

I leave my car at Hampton Downs as it is one that doesn't really need 'fiddling with'. When the extra track at Hamptons is up and running, there will be more options without straying too far.

What about building/buying a road legal car?

Motorsport is great fun, although you need to be realistic about costs. Have a chat to a few people running cars in the similar category as what you intend, get an idea of costs of running. We run a pulsar in clubmans down south here and the car running costs are about $200 per race weekend assuming no breakages (which aren't common). Entry fees can be up to $250, per race weekend and theres the annual licence costs.

Pays to do your research and make sound decisions. You get a lot of enjoyment out of racing, but the critical thing is to have a reliable car. Having constant breakages is the main thing that I see gets people out of the sport, that and marriage.

Rent secure storage wksp , hire a trailer until you decide if want to get seroius . But m sport can lead to divorce as her indoors reckons race cars gets more attention . Seen it happen several times .

Are there competitive racing simulator leagues in NZ? I have read the TRS and V8 drivers spend a bit of time at the simulator places.
