Diff Ratio

Is there a way to work out the diff ratio with the diff still in the vehicle.

tony9, Jun 25, 6:29am
What is the vehicle?

Red cars, yes.

Blue cars, no.

Assuming red cars are rear wheel drive, front engine. Blue cars are front wheel drive auto.

Yep, on RWD cars jack a back wheel off the ground and count how many turns of the propshaft it takes to get one turn of the wheel.

Fwd is a bit more difficult.

The car is a 92 Hilux surf. Manual 5 speed, v6 petrol. The identification plate on fire wall with trans/axle imformation is missing. and it is red.

Don't forget to halve the ratio if you do it this way.

Think about it.

Snap!

One easy opportunity is if you have access to a similar one that the ratios are known, see how many revs each are showing in top at 100Kph. If they are both the same, then they have the same ratio.

I'm using the vehicle daily for work and just need to know what diffs are available to buy.And thinking one with aclose ratio will do as FWD is generaly used in muddy conditions with wheel slip going on.

budgel, Jun 25, 6:54am
Yep, I forgot! I originally was going to say jack both wheels off the ground. Doh!

Looking at this forum it should be a 4.56.

It'll be 4.1 or 4.3 most likely. Jack the arse up so both wheels are off the ground and spin one wheel by hand. While doing this - look at the other side and observe what the opposite wheel is doing. if its turning in the same direction as the one you are turning then it is a LSD. If it is turning in the other direction as the one you are turning, then it is an open differential. The Hilux have two types of open differentials - 2 spider and 4 spider. Sometimes the 4 spider will mimic what you would expect from a LSD when performing this test. To eliminate this - with the wheel you have turned spinning . grab hold of it and stop it from spinning while observing what the other wheel does. If the other wheel jolts to a stop too - then it is for sure an LSD. If it continues to spin (in either direction) then it is an open head. To confirm the ratio of an LSD head, mark a spot on the pinion flange and matching one on the pumpkin. Place a mark on a wheel at say 12 o'clock and start to rotate the wheel whilst watching/counting the amount of times the pinion flange rotates. Complete turns will be the big number with partial turns being the number after the ':' You turn the wheel one complete revolution for an LSD. For and open head - you do the same marks but you turn the wheel twice. You also need to chock/or let down the other wheel so it cannot rotate. And this is it dude.

There were 2 Diff Ratios in those for that year, 4.56 and 4.88.

gmphil, Jun 25, 10:20pm
4.1/4.3 diesel model

gmphil, Jun 25, 10:21pm
need be same!

lk104, Jun 25, 10:28pm
No relevance, OP has already said its a V6 Petrol.

just spin the tire and shaft and count the rotations.

there is no point even going by other data. there is a few variations from factory but also it may not have original diffs in it.
