Toyota took over about three decades ago and yes the Passo is a very good car, but parts can be hard to get.

Brillant wee cars, my sister has a 2005 Diahatsu Sirion(same car, different badge) with over 235000kms,was a rental car, has never missed a beat yet, never uses oil between oil changes, has been a great car for the money, Toyota always owned a small share of Diahatsu but increased their shareholding around 2002ish.Diahatsu still make the Passo/ Boon/Sirion (newer shape) in Japan

personally I don't like them and I can't quite put my finger on why.
IMO they do feel "tinnyer" than most similar size priced cars.
