Are the front struts spose to have slight play. Has always had play & passed wof np its no worst than other passed wofs. Now the garage has failed it.

Yes, they are designed to have slight movement when unloaded. But the rubber bush is probably a bit worn by now and will likely be requiring replacement.

What? There's heaps of fwd cars on which it's permissible to have some play in the front top strut mounts. Honda Jazz/Fit, Holden Astra or VW Polo to name but a few.

Upper strut mounts, would be my guess. the golfs are really bad for it. As they get old they compress and when the wheels are hanging freeyou will get movement because there is clearance between the mount and the cup shaped piece they fit into. When you get it done get the mechanic to show you the old mount compared to a new one. There will be a big difference in height. poor design.
