What is the correct name for the "roll bar" type thing that are fitted to utes just behind the rear window that are made of big fat tube, with the angled stays. I think they are both functional and decorative ?

Sports bar. They only attach to the top edge of the tray so would help in a rollover, but sr2 nailed it.

they can be quite useful with long loads , to support it above the cab, but to do that efficiently the bar needs to be straight (most of them seem to be curved!) but the other end of the load needs to be in the tray, difficult to do if you have a hard lid, as most of the posers do!
