Mercruiser Alpha 1 sterndrive - no gears ?

Can anyone help ?

I have just had to the leg off to replace the shift cable and now no gears.
I have had it off again, checked im in forward when putting it on and also that the roller engages the shift cable. Goes on fine (locked in forward). As soon as i take it out of forward i then have no gears forward or reverse.

What am i doing wrong - its been off 3 times all with the same result ! HELP !

Loose clamp on the cable wire and/or the cable sheath isn't seated firmly at either end and pops in when it's put in gear? Has to be something like that IMO. Or does the prop need to be turned by hand gently when it's in neutral and you're trying to get it in gear, so that the gears can mesh?

Thanks mm12345 - even with all the shift assembly removed and operating the shift cable by hand it moves to easily - as if the roller isnt engaged in the selector lever at the other end. It must be something simple, as the selector lever operates the gearbox fine and the cable works fine - its just when im pairing them that something goes amiss !

is yours a standard rotation drive (rh)? i see forward is needed for them, but they do not say if reverse for lh.
