Was on Motorway Cops last night. Ute boiled and WPC offered her drink bottle to pour into the radiator. Then a farmer came along with four litre containers and poured straight in. Quite spectacular blow back.

As long as the radiator still has some water in it, you can hose the outside of the radiator core & the lower half of the engine block while the engine is running till it cools down a bit & then very slowly add water to the radiator.
Hit & miss as to either way of doing any damage as it very much depends on how much water is in the radiator & general cooling system including the heater core OR . leave it alone to cool off totally if the engine has lost ALL water from a split hose/ radiator.
As a general rule, modern engines really hate being overheated & are far less forgiving then the older non computer controlled engines.
