We had a 4-door one at work for a while. It was new (under 50,000kms) the whole time I knew it, so impossible for me to make any conclusions about the quality of it.
It was basically just a 2 litre car with 4WD and a lot of ground clearance - they have no low-ratio transfer box, or diff lock, or any of the other special machinery that serious off-roaders have, but which you really don't need if all you want to do is drive on the roads 99% of the time, but you want to be able to mount kerbs or drive onto muddy building sites without having to worry about getting stuck.
The fuel consumption, ride comfort and the handling and roadholding were not quite as good as a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry with the same sized engine would have been, but it certainly wasn't bad. Nice torquey little engine. Great to be able to see over the top of most of the traffic in town.
Definitely not a serious off-roader; just a good, practical little car.
[The only other small 4x4 I've driven was a Daihatsu Rocky, and the Rav4 is a smooth and sophisticated luxury car compared to that thing!]

Because the Rocky is a proper 4wd and the rav4 is not, some Rav's arent even 4wd.

Well from a males perspective, I would think long and hard before making the move to buy a RAV4 .
I know it sounds rather chauvinistic of me. But come on, you must admit, a RAV4 is designed for the female market or pensioners.
The lastest model shape is a bit different, as they are quite a lot bigger and sharper. But the older ones are, well. ummm. "ghey"!
