My mate did it. Good money, but only suitable for a single guy, and it's bloody hot (as expected). As soon as he started work, he was told to slow down and take his time, so the job was quite cruisy. I don't know the facts for sure, but this is what I was told a few years ago.

my cousin is doing it in Orange, NSW apparently, hes only a trainee and has been doing it for 6 weeks. take home pay is around $2750 after taxes etc. he pretty much works then lives at the pub on the weekends as theres nothing to do there

so true There is nothing to do there, but drink

soph001, Sep 11, 6:03pm
Yeah I know a guy who did this sort of thing, he got told to slow down too.

Wages are good

Weather wankers wildlife and women can be highly inhospitable.

No life but you can put money away and be pretty well off after 10 years.

mrcat1, Sep 11, 7:37pm
Theres nothing to do in Orange!
And Bathurst is like 50 minutes away. Theres heaps to do around Orange, I go over to there quite often, I have even been looking at shifting over to there. Is he working out Cadia mine!

croco1, Sep 11, 7:53pm
An old workmate is driving roadtrains in WA, someone he worked with over there went to Mitchells driving roadtrains and earned big money driving a near new Kenworth , apparently they are good to work for but have since been bought out by Toll.

the-lada-dude, Sep 12, 6:32am
i had a feeling they paid well, but $2750 for a trainee ! how do i get to this place exactly !i bet some of these mine sites have a massive staff turn over, what with" weather, wankers, wildlife ( both types ) and women "
any other info anyone, you've done well so far.i'm just about out'a here, i don't thinkjohn mentioned that those 177,000 new jobs he promised entailed crossing the tasman sea !

trogedon, Sep 12, 2:31pm
$2750 - you've not said - a week, month or !

trogedon, Sep 12, 2:33pm
My mother in law came back from a holiday (train Sydney to Perth with bus trips and then staying in Perth etc) last week. She met an emergency room nurse who??

the-lada-dude, Sep 12, 3:40pm
good point TROGEDON , but $2750/week is not unrealistic, was talking to a fella that flys to / from aussie cleaning out steam boilers, and makes more $ in a day than most chaps earn a wk, he was saying the're building a big LNG plant near rockhampten QL and labourers and T/A 's ( trade assistants ) are getting $2800+ wk and they cant get enough workers, let alone skilled people !

jsbike, Sep 12, 3:44pm
so where do I apply!!!!!!!!

franc123, Sep 12, 3:49pm
Cleaning out boilers in a stinking hot climate, wow that sounds like fun.I've always wondered why the constant need to recruit for these jobs in NZ when they already have a population of over 20 million and a higher unemployment rate than they have here! The jobs are either crap or else there is a terrible work ethic and/or unemployment benefits are too generous for them not to be able to fill these positions domestically.

big.b-lil.c, Sep 12, 4:13pm
i have seen adds for husband and wife driving team's advertised with a starting rate of $1900 each with a review after 30 days then another after 6 months then every year. over $200k (between them) that's more than a owner driver can earn here with no financial risk

jezz43, Sep 12, 11:15pm
its thru newcrest mines, they are apparently running 3 of the biggest mines in that area. hes on gold at the moment, and yes, thats $2750 a week as an assistant. and all he apparently does is follow the qualified guy and do what he says, which is usually sweet FA. from what i know they still need about 200 more workers he was saying.

foxdonut, Sep 13, 12:08am
Thats the trick. If it was so easy to get paid a million bucks and hour to dig rock out of the ground then everyone, including the near infinite supply of non english speaking retards that drive Melbourne taxi's would be doing it.

Everyone knows someone who's "brothers, mates, neighbours boyfriend" gets paid same sum as the weekly lottery, but its rare to see that person telling everyone how good it is.

Also - If you live near a mine where take home pay is 3 grand a week - your rent is going to be a grand a week because of supply and demand.

If you want to mech for a big mining crowd your best bet is to join the NZDF five years ago as a logistics engineer, do a stint in the service and then get over there last week.

The mines are only 1 way to make big bucks, but at the expense of your health. I worked in the Kalgoolie, Leanora, Laverton area in the '80's as a fitter/mechanic and found the constant dust or nickel ore a pain. Went offshore construction for Woodside Offshore Petroleum and found the environment much more tolerable. Pay was much better too. I kicked around the offshore oil & gas game for a few years doing jacket installations and pipe lay up in the NW Timor sea , Darwin area. Was on $1850 au / day at the end in 2009. 4 weeks on, 4 off, fly in and out from Auckland. Wish I wasn't so old, would still be doing it!

hunter7082, Sep 13, 7:53am
same as what we have heard, new gear, good to work for.

taranaki63, Sep 13, 9:11am
i worked at cadia valley in orange and was taken 3200 pw newcrest can be pretty ruthless with there workers
the mine manager is a real prick he likes to hide behind vehicles and look around corners waiting for people to stuff up then rings your boss and has a whinge
theres a few contractors there that are good to work for
minebiz is the company who hire ifyour interested

samaside, Sep 13, 11:11am
Hey lada dude, haven't heard of that company, but there are heaps of companies and heaps of jobs.
Are you single! How old! Depending on those I would just come over to Perth and have a go. If you're single it's a pretty fun life, I would highly recommend doing it. Its a laugh.

samaside, Sep 13, 11:22am
Hi foxdonut, I hear what you're saying, I don't know why people that are close don't do it. They just don't. I workthe Pilbara, which is pretty much serviced by Perth, and hardly anybody I work with is from Perth, it's bizarre.
It seems to be a young mans game, maybe to do with all the safety stuff you have to put up with, older guys seem to get mad and refuse to do it and end up leaving. I'm not sure though!
But yeah, I do it, I love it, and would highly recommend it to a young single guy!

tahnasha, Sep 13, 12:04pm
I spose there are alot of Kiwis in the Mines because of the attractive salaries, coming from a low wage economy such as NZ, it would be very tempting for alot of people.I know there's alot of people aroundwhere I live that have husbands/partners working in the mines. It's not for everyone, my neighbours husband is in Mackay, and although he's on awesome wages, she said it can be quite hard on the family.

the-lada-dude, Sep 13, 2:43pm
i'm not a spring chicken, but hell, with the right attitude, i'd only have to stick it out for a year, and that would do me!
