At long last got the a12 running right

morrisman1, Sep 13, 5:25pm
Today I spent the afternoon rebuilding the carb on the datsun a12 in the Morry Ute. Before rebuild it would cough and splutter and was absolutely undrivable until properly warmed up and even then it wouldn't run right. It wouldnt run right on full choke or no choke either. It smoked a bit of black too.

After the rebuild it runs perfect and as it should so I couldnt be happier. I was worried that it was just 'how they ran' before the rebuild because that would be a real pain having to warm up a car before going anywhere. Now my machine just became 10x more drivable.

The ute is coming along well for those interested, Im now going through the finishing touches and last stages of the rebuild process. Im ahead of schedule for my goal of having it finished by next april and its looking more like before the end of this year at the current rate. Im looking forwards to going cruising in it!

Good stuff. Must be about time for another photo or 2!

The red looks much better than in the photo because of the lighting in the shed. When taking photos outside it comes out properly

Yep, this is real. Keep it coming.
Did you see the Minor onto Silvia floorpan website! I wonder how it's coming along.

fair enough, it is a motoring board after all! Id be careful with your language there, shit is apparently an illegal word according to the local 'sheriff'

Its good being out in the garage most nights and making progress, makes a change from not working on it for about two years!

As it stands:
~Electrics all but complete, just need to tidy some wiring here and there and once the deck is on I can put the rear lights on but other than that its pretty much all done.
~Body work is almost complete. A few things like bonnet latch needs done and I have a heap of rubber grommets and gaskets which have various homes throughout the vehicle.
~ Engine and drivetrain are now complete with only a couple little jobs to do.
~ Glazing I will wait till later to put that in because it is quite handy having no windscreen while working on the car.
~ brakes are complete but I do need to paint the front calipers. I thought they were aluminium so left them bare. Two years later they have a bit of surface rust on them so it would look good to give them a paint.
~ Electric windows are up and running properly. Thanks for helping with the motors xacoon, they needed some new plastic parts in the gearbox but that was pretty simple once I got around to it.
~ Interior is barely started yet. I have put a layer of soundproofing under the dash and will be putting another layer in soon. I have a set of black carpets to go in, new from the UK. Seats I dont know what I am doing yet. When I have the spare cash Ill get the headlining and other carpeting done on the back panel along with as much soundproofing as I can fit in practicably. I aim to have this as being a nice quiet vehicle that is nice to travel in. I will make sure the seats are soft because with the truck suspension it will be bouncier than a car but thats just part of having the ute.

There is a morry minor convention in the shaky city next april which I will take the ute to, and hopefully head up to nelson and back down the west coast which will be a nice trip to do and a good outing for it. That is the sort of driving I will use it for rather than as a daily driver. It will be a 'sunday driver' car.

yea I did, looks awesome but I dont think he has made much progress lately. I did read that something came up which involved a lot of time or money which might be the hold up. It would be great to see that one finished.

Here is a video of the engine after the carb rebuild. Its a bit noisier than normal because no air filter while I made adjustments but with the air filter on its nice and quiet.
