Is it rude to ask what the reason for selling

dragontales, Sep 23, 2:40pm
is ! on a car auction, auction says "genuine reason for selling" ! its a very nice car, would it be rude if i asked what that genuine reason was, or is it none of my business lol

pettal, Sep 23, 2:41pm
Not rude at all .

A thread on the apparent obsession with giving reasons for selling was here the other day , why does it matter ! (possibly if the car is near very new yet up for sale , then a "genuine reason" may felt to be given to a prospective purchaser).

It matters because there is a difference between lying, and withholding information. If a vehicle is a great deal and a great car etc, I want to know why they are selling it. On the one hand you ask 'why does it matter' on the other hand, I would say, well, if you are genuine, you would be honest about why you're selling it. If a seller is unwilling to be honest about why they are selling it, what reason do I have to beleive them when they describe its condition, servicing history or other details! I ask as many questions as possible, because i want to know exactly what Im getting

true good points i guess I/people can ask what they want and if the seller wants to lie and or honest well thats up to them too. ok thanks will go ask that question now, i will keep it all polite of course

gman35, Sep 23, 3:24pm
Fair enough if something is very cheap for a quick sale as seller may genuinely need cash etc. yet doesn't want to cause suspition , but I find it it is probably an over-used term for many "usual sales at usual asking prices"

If somebody is selling a car after owning it for just a few weeks then its a damn good thing to ask.A thread recently mentioned somebody selling because they were going overseas butthen saying that they were willing to look at a trade!Probably planning a few days in Brissy.

Frankly dragontales does it actually matter!
If yu do all the checks-stolen/finance and mechanical inspection and it comes up all okwhat does it matter why they are selling it !

tigertim20, Sep 23, 5:23pm
intermittent elcetrical faults!
its got a dodgy wof!
they themselves have wound the odo back!
it is smoking like a MoFo, but theyve put some of that 'stop smoke' crap in it to hide the issue just long enough to make the sale!
they drive like a retard and areconstantly pulled over by the cops!
could be many many reasons! You seem to be well known as a reputable bloke Kaz, unfortunately, many other sellers, both private and yards, do not have the same sterling reputation!

friend of mine was looking at buying an NC30 a while ago, about 8 months ago. He saw one back them on Trademe, it said 'genuine reason for selling moving to australia in XX weeks'
It is still on here for sale now, 8 months later, and the seller is saying 'will trade for a ute'
Asking questions gives you an opportunity to gauge their honesty.

bash, Sep 23, 5:34pm
you mite be selling because the owner died or you are in money trouble any number of reasons that is in no way anybodys bisiness but the sellers

richynuts, Sep 23, 6:26pm
Dumb question just like people e-mailing me asking why are the km's so low! Maybe 'coz it didn't get used much! Much better to ask questions on what maintenence has been done. like cambelt/waterpump etc.

tigertim20, Sep 23, 6:53pm
wrong. If a person intends to own the vehicle, they have a right, and usually a desire, to know the vehicles history, in order to ascertain that a) the information provided is accurate, and b) that the seller is being honest.
Its not hard is it. why are you selling the car!
It was my fathers, and he passed away. - Oh, Im sorry to hear.
I cant afford the repayments. - fair enough, could be a good deal for me then
I split up with my partner, and dont need a big vehicle anymore.
Its really not that hard to just be honest.

tigertim20, Sep 23, 6:55pm
You could try responding to the underlying question rather than the syntax of their email.
'Its a weekend car it doesnt get used much, You can get a carjam report to confirm the KMs are not at all dodgy'

kazbanz, Sep 23, 9:49pm
MOST of that getws covered off by a decent mechanical and paper trail inspection so I guess if its all good i wouldn't care =emphasis on if its all good of course

dragontales, Sep 24, 10:33pm
its ok i asked the seller they came back with an answer, it just was a thought i had hmm wonder if its rude to ask, and now that i have thought about it guess not, keep it polite and everything,i suppose when you list a car you are gonna get all types and even all kinds of crazy questions too, my next question is can i come have a look at it, test drive it, check it out with my mechanic friend etc etc

Thing is if they are that dodgy to have used the tricks above they are not going to tell you anyway.
