Spot welders anyone

I want to build one from an old transformer to spot weld 6mm rods together
but I think the energy/kva required may be to great for this application
These can be built from old transformers by removing secoondary winding
& rewinding with less turns of heavier wire, ideas please

How far from a transformer do you live! Have you got a decent wooden ladder!

Why don't you just google it!

Microwave transformers and battery cable. I need say no more

Depending on the thickness of metal, usually around 60 amps at 30 odd volts is adequate. The requirement is to heat the metal, not arc or burn holes. The transformer can be ratted from a cheap chinese welder, a heavy duty relay or contactor is put in the 240 volt primary to actuate it once the pressure is on the joint. Even 20 amps can do the job, but very much slower for the joint to fuse. I made one many years ago thinking I would use it lots, but it became a space waster. You can also experiment with a car battery, but its very difficult to control the current. Strips of stainless steel make cheap high current resistors as its a poor conductor of electricity.Maybe this may help you.!

yea been there done that microwave trannys remove the hv winding & rewind etc etc but need some grunt as welding 6mm round with tig or mig very slow &* messy ohh well worth a try.
