i have heard of flushing the engine with a mix of auto transmission fluid. basically you drain your oil, then refil with a mix of 25% auto trans oil 75 normal oil.then start her up and let idle for half an hour.
then drain and refill with new oil.

has worked on a few mazdas.

Which engine! FE12v, FE 16v, FS 16v, or 24v V6!

the-lada-dude, Oct 4, 6:24pm
have you changed the oil lately !

casper35, Oct 4, 6:37pm
Its the FE12 valve one.Not due for oil change yet.

20w-50 oil, and some additive. Once those lifters start to "go" they can rattle away for ages. The fix is by replacement of the hydraulic lifters. Not horrific, but still costly when compared to value of car. If you can put up with it, it doesn't matter too much.

jasongroves, Oct 4, 11:18pm
Subaru and Mitsubishi dealerships/workshops also tend to stock it for some reason! .lol

jasongroves, Oct 4, 11:21pm
Would be worth adjusting the clearances to quieten down the noise too.;)
Inlet and exhaust are both .30mm hot.

jasongroves, Oct 4, 11:22pm
Are the lifters hydraulic in the 12 valve Fish!

blackdotlova, Oct 5, 12:52pm
Don't worry about them been there done that with a ford dealer in wgton, it took 13 loan cars and as many months for them to admit that they where a cock up from new and they knew about it, changing them will only last for so long and you will have the same noise back.

johnf_456, Oct 5, 3:28pm
How is this helpful!
Thicker oil, just grab some when its on special and you are away like 20w 50 or something.

He.was.joking John.

casper35, Oct 5, 4:05pm
Thanks guys will get some thicker oil and see how it goes.Cheers.

I used to have a Mazda did the same thing, rather than using heavier oil I found using semi synthetic or synthetic oil quitened the liftres especially for the cold start up.

mugenb20b, Oct 5, 5:16pm
Those engines were designed to use low viscosity oil 10w30. At 240k, it's not unusual to have noisy lifters, and don't be surprised if the noise remains after the oil change. I used to have two Mazda 626s (same as Telstars), one was SOHC, the other DOHC and they both had noisy lifters. I just flushed the oil out a couple of times, the noise was still there but not as bad and not enough to bother me.

casper35, Oct 5, 5:21pm
Its only for the first 15/20 seconds when you start it first thing in the morning after that you dont hear them again.

Sheesh. MBL8,,, should be called **shut the buggas up**
It DOES. end of ssttoorryyyy
Now bak ta klass.
hydraulic lifters basiacly have a steel leak-down plate.
With multi valved engines and limited space the sealing ability of this plate is compromised by contaminated oil and the effect of **varnish-like** deposits due to heating and cooling oil.
PRO-MA MBL8 is essentially good old **molyslip** and.
Can effect a seal without stripping and cleaning the leak down plate.
[Edited to add]
pro-ma mbl8 works best at the slowest idle speed possible with a warm engine.
