help needed tosolve a "discussion" i'm having with someone if you're a more "mature" person and can remember. I seem to remember when i was a kid in Napier, 30 odd years ago, the city (or maybe region!) had its own traffic cops, different to the rest of the country. I have images of them in grey coloured holdens, not the usual black and white that the rest of the country's traffic cops drove back then. have i lost my marbles!

No, you are spot on. Before the MOT days councils ran local traffic enforcement.

The napier cops had grey HQs back in early '70s.The rego numbers started with FY32xx.How's that for memory.Mind you, I don't recall what I had for breakfast!

Ill second--third ahh whaddever that. Auckland city council had its own traffic dept thaty were idiotic enough to run CBX650 honda's as patrol bikes. Funny as all heck if the cop forgot to turn all the lights off when he stopped because sure as eggs the battery would be flat and he';'d have to try to crash start the thing A mate of mine was a bike patrol cop for tamiki council and conned them into buying VFR700's as patrol bikes--In their day a reasonably pukka sport bike.

They would have been Police cars. The Police used grey from the mid sixties until about 1977.

FY3217 was one.And I saw it around not too many years ago in Wellington, and recognised the rego.
Oh, and by the way, I had a two-course breakfast this morning - coffee followed by toothpaste!

Lower Hutt CC had traffic cops as well.If they chased a car into town, they handed the chase over to (Wellingtons) MOT at Horokiwi.

I got pulled up on the Hutt Motorway on my bike, by a cop in a MkV Cortina. He was red in the face and yelled at me that he "had to 170kph to catch me".Funny thing was, he had turned off the Cortina, but it was so hot it kept running-on.Hard not to laugh (nowadays I am SO more responsible.)

i got to know all the boys from tamaki as they came in for gloves, helmets, tyres etc so didnt donate to their xmas funds. hehehe
the cbx was a nice bike to ride without all the police crap on it
as for the post about mt albert cops i think you're in the wrong decade maybe !,coz i moved up in 85 and they had widetrack bluebirds as patrol cars then ( and NO one got off )
