You have to go through NZQA to get them, Mind you i did my apprenticeship in the 80's and when the old apprenticeship board changed over to NZQA they "lost" quite a few records mine included. Even though i did mine through a Govt dept and it was verified by them NZQA say i never did one, still having a fight with them and hasnt done any job prospects any good either

NZQA dont even recognise my qualifications, they reckon theyre 'Olde Worlde'. but for $800 the nice man will transfer it to lovely shiney new NZQA credits for me. HA!

I did an 8000 hour appentiship in the eightys that gave me a qualification for life. Now I have to getlicence to build a house. That is something I am already qualified to do and have done hundreds of times. But I must hand over my money to the man with shiny shoes.

and the real bitch is unless you keep handing that money over every 2,3,5 yrs! your quals instantly lapse, you are no longer qualified, ie you are useless and incompetent, but the instant you pay the bribe you are equally as suddenly fully qualified and competent again
why bother with apprenticeships, they don't decide your working ability, paying the money to the shiny shoes does that

I found it interesting that I hadn't worked in my original trade since 1979. Then I just wanted to do the odd job, so needed to pay the man some $$ for a practising licence. All it took was a 2 hour course during which there was no testing of my knowledge or skills and I was suddenly a skilled and certified person again. Without that 2 hour course I was a danger to the world. No-one has ever asked for my apprenticeship papers (which I still have from the '60s).
