No surprises as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't touch any of those cars.

Where's Jazz when you need him!

Those that have Falcons, commodores and VWs have friends/ relatives to come and get them if the car does not work, Reliability of the friends/ relatives is more important than the reliability of a mechanical device that will eventually be discarded.

Since when has a VW Golf been a favourite ride in NZ! In the last 25 years we've lived in several Auckland suburbs, Northland and Timaru and I can't say as I've seen many VW's.unless they were all at the mechanics I suppose.

No neither would I, Corollas are absolute snooze street, overpriced in the used market, and about as exciting to own as a microwave oven or blender, a Honda Jazz is the same only smaller, and neither are suitable for towing a huge load or for fitting a large family in, or pleasant to drive a long distance in.I don't care how many airbags have been fitted in or how many NCAP stars it has, you get hit by a 44 tonner your are still going to get splattered.Think I'll stick to me old Falcon which does all the things a front drive Jap car can't, with absolute ease and amazingly in 15 years hasn't caused asingle "reliability" problem. These AA and Consumers people seem to live in a parallel universe where everybody can afford a brand new car every few years and that an econobox suits everybody, its utter drivel IMO.

i wonder how much they got paid by the manufacturers to print that crap!

the most expensive thing i've had go wrong on my commodore, is the drivers window regulator packed up, i had to get a new one fitted as a secondhand one wasn't available. ALL cars have problems

coming your way tomorrow to test drive an xr6, good to see that many kms without issue.

I think you guys are ignoring what it says in the article:
"The top three problem areas reported were electronic systems, brakes and power-fittings."
That has nothing to do with the engine (well, mostly). "Consumers" as related to in the artice (and assuming they're all Aucklanders) are more worried about fancy cupholders and looking flash than how well the car goes. How many threads on here do you see saying "My VW's power wing mirrors/windows/steering needs replacing, but the parts are way too expensive!"! I can tell you,A LOT!
Waiting for Jazz.

Of course all cars have problems, IIRC there was one model of the Honda Jazz that they think the sun shines out of the exhaust of, that had to be recalled because of the possibility of the power window master switch catching on fire!

Has there been a new model of a car that HASN'T been recalled for one thing or another.

great cars, AUs are better than BA imo and will hold their value better. There is a reason why they are the taxi of choice in aussie where 1 million km isn't uncommon.

Ive driven BAs, dont intrest me at all really. And I see AU XRs are worth as much if not more at times than the BA.

I have an AU2 XR6.Brought it at 18,000 km in 2002.It has just ticked over 246,000 km.All it has cost me is tyres and a rhf wheel bearing.(The normal brake rotors go without saying).Work as a mechanic in a major jap franchise and the ford will definately stay.

"Later models will have better crash-test ratings and safety features such as anti-skid braking, stability control and multiple air bags," she said. Don't these people care about the environment! Discarding perfectly serviceable cars before they've done their full lifetime is a criminal waste of resources.

The power of marketing my man.
I'd bet my left one that my '94 Commodore ute has & will (for it's life) put out less planet killers than Holden emitted making the damn thing lol.

That's a very telling statement.

True. All the high-tech devices and systems can be a nightmare when it goes wrong (and very expensive to the customer).Everything down to resetting a service reminder requires a factory computer. All designed to force the buyer back to the dealer for all services at their highly inflated hourly rate.

Damn my Holden in 110,000km I have had to replace the tyres, the brakes and the battery. Think i may have even replaced the spark plugs and repaired the exhaust as well. Thought it would go for ever ( still going strong at 225000km) as long as I filled the petrol tank.

LOL . Mitsi's. HUH Not so bad after all Toyota and Honda came out the most trouble-free of all models and ages, while Ford and Holden had more problems than average and Subaru, Mitsubishi and Nissan rated consistently in the middle.

Commodores and falcons seem rather crude, compared to Japanese legendary build quality and refinement. Yes, the engines and transmissions are incredibly reliable, but there not as well made as Japanese cars. (In my opinion).

Corolla might be as exciting as a blender BUT is utterly RELIABLE:))))
