hi all, i've owned this carbureted mitsi for ~18 months without a single problem. 2 days ago I parked it on the road and this morning tried to fire it up. it turned over for about 30seconds before finally firing, I started to drive down the road and the motor died like it has no gas (there's atleast 10litres in there) - trying to turn it over again (with a jumper too) doesnt fire. It's acting like there is no gas.
every day for 18months i've used this car and it starts first thing no matter what in 3 seconds, until now.
Is there anything I can do to isolate the problem or see if the motor is ok! I've heard that you can pour gas down the carby and try to fire it, is that correct!
any advice is greatly appreciated.

Basics - Check and see if it has spark. Is it getting fuel to the carby!

Thanks for your reply - how can I confirm/deny that fuel is getting to the carby! Time for a new learning experience.

are you sure it is carbureted! pump the gas a couple of times and have a sniff. if its carby you'll smell the gas no worries - or it isn't getting any. if its injected, I would skip that and go onto a spark test

100% its carby, and yep while turning over it stinks like gas.

I found this via google "Unplug a spark plug wire and lay it close to a bit of grounded bare chassis or body metal, have someone crank the engine and watch to see if it sparks. "
is this the process I want to follow! I really appreciate your help a.woodrow

ok, so next I would check spark. remove a plug lead, insert screwdriver up lead making sure it is long enough to have the shaft sticking out. hold the screwdriver shaft 3-4mm from metal work on engine eg rocker cover, have a friend wind over and see if their is spark. tip: dont touch the metal part of screwdriver

thanks - i'll wait for my flatmate to wake up and walk down the road to test, will report back soonish.
is one plug sufficient to test, or all!

1 will be enought to test. if there is no spark then you are probably looking at distributor, better to take to a garage to confirm diagnosis. If there is spark, then could be plugs, timing, compression, etc etc and still probably needs to go to garage

NZ-new or import! the import models have electro-feedback carburettors for emissions control. Also being a '92 it could be either the earlier 87-92 shape 1.6 or 1.8 8V or the later 92-96 shape 1.8 16V. If it's a GL or GLX it will be NZ-new, if its a G, GE, GF, MU etc then it's an import.

hi phillip, yes its a 92 GLX
luckily one of my mechanically minded friends are going to assist in diagnosing this problem - hopefully they aren't too far away, im hoping like hell it isn't too serious or i'm waiving bye-bye to my recently acquired electronics :S
hah - yeah, thankfully bob can go . himself - this is new zealand, its not f.ked until. edit: its on fire

sounds like it, 1.8

yep ok NZ-new with the SOHC8V 4G37 1755cc engine and basic Aisan carb. If you are smelling fuel when turning over I would say the carb is filling up the fuel bowl just fine - perhaps look at the ignition system and check for weak spark. I had an '89 GLX which gave me nearly 90,000kms of just about trouble-free running. Only 'major' I needed to do was a head gasket, and that was at 360,000kms. Once it's running, are there any other issues (ie running rough, overheating, blowing water out the radiator overflow bottle etc)!

Square edged body = Nz new Rounded edge body = jap Import
Some mechanical parts still interchange, even the "U" shape suspension beam will swap over (done that)

for 2sec when it initially fired it the revs felt under utilized, then it was totally normal until the motor shutdown, while in gear giving gas wouldn't accelerate (like I ran out of gas) and putting foot on clutch just killed it.

sounds like my car mechanic said its transmission and dirt in the gear or something like that might need a new gear
phillip.weston,

could be the mechanical fuel pump.

Sorry mate you're mistaken. Both the 87-92 'square shape' and the 92-96 'round shape' were available both NZ-new or Jap import. I've owned both shapes in both NZ-new and Jap import.

LOL oh ok, blimin confusing around that era *** but I did swap the main beam over between the square shape & the wedge shape. Sorry if it was confusing earlier.

you're confusing it with the even earlier Sigma/V3000 which has the same rear suspension as the 87-92 Galant.

Wasthe wedge 88 GLX (ex traffic) v3000 & got the front beam from the slightly smaller square shape 92. 92 was on the reg tag in the windscreen of the doner car
Mine had split 3/2rds of the way around slightly to the left of the center. If I remember correctly, I had to use the bottom arms & hub/stubs ets from the 88 suspension but the rest was the same & went through wheel alignments ok after that.

Is the engine check lamp on!
zrawnsley,
Oct 11, 7:53am
nope check engine wasn't on, oil levels and all other fluid's I can see measurements for are good.
I ended up taking it to a mechanic at 3pm yesterday and they told me it was a faulty distributor. hopefully pick a part has what I need, although no matter what now I'm glad its nothing super major
