Bo11ocks.
Electrically they're no worse than a mid'90s BMW or Merc, cars of similar complexity. They rust less than most cars their age.

they said 1995 not 1955.
mrfxit,

LOL wrong again 1955 , the sheet steel they were made of back then would be about the same as what we call HEAVY PLATE steel now. (just about) You would know this, if you had ever worked on a jag of that age

Come to think of it, I think most of the rust problems with ANY brand, started around the late 60's to early 70's
rob_man,

They do have a few rust issues, particularly around the rear screen area and rear cowl/boot channel. Nothing too horrible but be aware.

allow me to chip in - and I speak from experience having owned two X300s, including my current NZ new Sovereign. These cars do NOT have electrical issues [or in fact any other serious issues]. While based on the older XJ40 [sold until '93] Ford took ownership and pumped huge funds in to sort problems. The electrical system was one area that got a total makeover. My sovereign has done 217,000km, and to the best of my knowledge the only work needed has been a diff rebuild [under my ownership] due to worn axle bearings, and it could do with new engine coils - a known point of failure that causes a misfire. apart from that everything is perfectly good. Jaguar World magazine did an excellent buyers guide recently. IMO the X300 are the perfect cost-effective road car - cheap!, quickish [very torquey], actually far better handling than you might expect, and economical enough - in the last month i have done Hamilton-Whakatane return and got 30.1mpg, then Hamilton to Hastings and got 29.5mpg.
The X300 is old enough to be relatively simple, but new enough to be 'sorted' - a kind of "sweet spot" in the XJ lineup - miles better than the XJ40, and simpler/less troublesome than the X308 V8s.
And before anyone wades in with more disinformation - these do NOT run the old XK engine. They have the AJ16, which is a 4 valve per cylinder development of the XJ40's AJ6, with numerous other developments.

Ha. thanks for that bit of info.I was just going to wade in and say it'll take you 2 weeks to adjust the valve shims.

surely your S3 is not the same X300 1995 model the OP is inquiring about though!

Having owned both a S3 Jaguar and now a X308 I can tell you there was HUGE improvements in rustproofing of Jaguars after the S3 and again with the X300 and X308 cars.

As Fiatracer above says, the X300 cars from 1994 to 1997 are an excellent buy for all the reasons he gave. Preferably buy NZ new with good service history if possible. The last of the XJ40 Jaguars 92 - 94 were supposedly pretty good too but the rust protection and electrics were not as good as the X300 cars. The X308 (V8 XJs) are getting cheap now and the V8 is a lovely engine. As long as its known issues - cam chain tensioners, thermostats and coolant pipes mainly - have been replaced with later updated ones they should be fine.

yeah plenty on here with 400k on the clock and thats a good sign

The rust issues are mainly if they were UK new and then imported - the poms use salt instead of grit on their roads. But a NZ new one that's been garaged shouldn't have a rust issue.
