They make a bad get away vehicle but that was on Waiheke Island brings back bad memories

Don't miss 1st gear going up Liverpool St.with the roof off.

nathanmac, Oct 28, 9:37pm
I think one of the political parties should campaign for bringing back the Trekka from the dead as a way to boost jobs and compete with the Chery.

The hard part would be finding a modern comparative to the quality running gear of the original. but as long as it has real roof racks it would already be far superior in it's options.

Vote winner right there.

Ol'Trekka in the backyard of a mates we were 13-14yrs old it was full of crap, carpet, paint cans, plaster board etc.pull the battery from his mothers car, petrol from the mower can and we got the beast run'n.ye-haaaa.
Out with the paper and felts drew up a w.o.f & reg.looked real from 10+ feet away.off we blasted heaving the carpet, cans and every other crap out the back as we ran the gauntlet of the West Auck streets.p!ssed off a few other road users but we were on a mission to Bethells beach.
Hit the rough stuff put'n the ol'wagon to the offroading test losing a mate off the back and not realising untill sometime later.went back and pick'd him up not a happy camper.goodtimes, good days back in 77 ;)

Crusing down the Mossburn straight to Lumsden on a Sunday morning for a beer (when pubs were,nt open on a sunday) when a wheel goes past us, driver comments"someones lost a wheel" next thing Trekka slews around and flops onto its left side, driver comments "I do believe it,s one of ours". No harm done, picked it up and put a nut off each other wheel on and onward to the pub.

No names, no pack drill, but local owner and his mate took his to the Prestige dealership and parked it right outside the showroom, in full view.

Strode in and asked to buy an Aston Martin & a Maserati.

I think you can probably guess the rest.

They'd just won LOTTO!

lookoutas, Oct 29, 9:06am
Talked to a guy a few years back who had a couple of Trekka's - he said there were 11 still registered.
I wasn't sure whether to show amazement or be concerned.

next-to-normal, Oct 29, 9:14am
if they were to make a new model today with a flat deck option and 4wd drive, with a new skoda 1.8 TSI diesel motor, galv body, it be a winner along with a britten 150 cc endro hunting/farm scooter, and a hamilton fisherman/diver jetski., on the back but hey this is nz,no is the vision and answer to everything.

serf407, Oct 29, 11:02am
or the fuller version of 'no' is the phrase 'no you can't do that, it will cost too much.'

Playing 'bongo drums' with a cuz on the Trekka roof after feeding hay, the driver was not amused.

You would miss first gear if you thought it would be were a normal first gear was though!

I enjoyed my Trekka, and it never failed to start. Ever. It regularly failed to stop, but that was a different problem.

Socram! I thought you left TMMB. Glad to see you back. I just added you to my Facebook friend list. Ha!

When the Trekka disappeared, the canopies carried on a useful life as goat shelters.

fryan1962, Oct 29, 5:54pm

bigjerry, Oct 29, 6:57pm
There's a few of them in Gisborne at the (so called) Transport and Technology museum. That place is loaded with oddities and interesting crap.

socram, Oct 29, 7:43pm
Threw a wobbly with them after an undeserved warning and am also spending a fair bit of time overseas these days.Back - for a while anyway!

nathanmac, Oct 29, 7:47pm
How's your project car coming along!I remember seeing some pics on MA a few months back with some fresh paint etc., not sure if you've updated them recently though as haven't been on there for a while.

Also saw a very similar bodied car (to my eye anyway) in the Wanaka car museum a couple of weeks ago.It was badged a Wolseley, tidy looking car though.

lovemore_mbigi, Oct 30, 6:23am
Problem with the Gypsy was that they were all-steel so they rusted as fast as an Austin 1100.

macpower, Oct 30, 6:51am
Had a gypsy back in 1975 ex auck harbour bridge authority one.Repowered with 3ltr a110 motor.Broke a few diffs no prob took pinion out and disconnect rear drive shaft just fwd until got more parts.Other problem front dirr used to pummel oil filter cartridge-lost sump oil one day at top of table mountain from gentle annie side-managed to drain diffs and gear box to get enough oil to keep going back to whitianga slowly.

fryan1962, Oct 30, 7:30am
I believe there is the first trekka at Motat I have not seen it on display

socram, Jan 16, 6:14pm
Progess on the project has been slow this year for a variety of reasons. I am back on to it now, currently struggling with the home made fibreglass boot lid!Car goes (very well) and has burbled up the road and back. (Wow!)
Correct.Car is the same overall shape as that Wolseley you saw.
I believe the certification process is now more drawn out, especially with purpose built front suspension approval.
