Been told by a couple of people to take tapiit cover off, remove oil line rail things and drill the holes out slightly bigger to 0.5mm! as they have really small holes in then, allot better flow apparently, Anybody heard of this! Cheers

I was advised NOT to do this as it alters the oil pressure, insted use a gas axe tip cleaner to clean the holes and a good degreaser and compressed air to flush the crap out of them.

Make sure you use the right grade oil also, sr engines hate to be neglected. So lack of oil changes and the wrong grade oil can have its affect.

whats the correct grade oil! 10w 40! and an engine flush!

Cleaning the oil holes will save your cam lobes, but it wont make your hydraulic lifters any quieter. A shot of Pro-Ma MBL8 with your nice new clean oil will help the tapping.

Its a 97 by the way

Go to Nissan and get the torque sequence and torque rate for the bolts that hold the oil rail down as they also hold the cam caps down when you come to reassemble it, and cover the lobes in start up lube or oil before you put rocker cover back on.

In the SR20DE, I use Magnatec 10-40 to get rid of the start-up rattle.
Works a charm.

Valvoline 10-30 works real nice in these. quiet as.cant remember the product name itself though

Doesn't get rid of the start-up noise tho :/

By 97 it probably wont have the feed tube style - oil change with some Mazda Genuine oil & a shot of Pro-Ma as NZT has stated will suffice

quite correct zephyr. Is the start up noise a rattle. If so its the chain tensioner taking its time to pump out.

Mazda oil!Is that a typo or does Mazda make some really good oils!
I have a friend who is a mechanic (has been for many years) and he recommended drilling out the oil feed line on SR20's. He did this to his own car and a few race cars that he has helped people build.Never seemed to stop his Primera getting along alright.I don't recall the size that he said to bore them out to however which may (will definitely!) make a difference.

SR20s are known for this issue. take them out and blow them with a air compressor as little bits of crap get stuck in the holes.

Ive drilled a few out to 1mm dosnt affect the oil pressure to any major amount.

Its more likely to be the VCT rattle that SRs develop, its not harmful just annoying and expensive to fix.
Sweet as cheers guys have a few ideas now, nothing major im just fussy, ill have a look over next week or so

Yes Mazda make a lovely thin oil with loads of additives & detergents - Ive used it in Mitzi's for noisy lifters & works wonders on Nissan SR motors

I wish i knew that before i serviced my friends Legnum VR4 with noisey lifters.

just go buy new ones from nissan haha. They stock them for abour $200 I think. and always run a 10w30 or 40 in these or they just block the fine oiling tubes
