The bog is not a problem. The rust will be tho.

Is that you GD!

vat69, Oct 27, 5:32pm
lazy bastards.good luck mate kick them in the bog spreaders

drew2009, Oct 27, 5:34pm
I can never understand why people bog up doors and boot lids ect. so much easier to just bolt on a new panel. Whats the owner got planned for it!

nathanmac, Oct 27, 5:35pm
I thought I had the record for the most amount of bog applied to a car - my first Corolla. looks like I have a ways to go.

franc123, Oct 27, 5:44pm
Its what you have to expect when restoring cars that old, you are not just erasing 45 years of general deterioration but also having to erase 45 years of substandard repairs as well, something that I'm being well and truly reminded of myself restoring a 60's vehicle at the moment.Besides HD/HR Holdens were notorious for rusty doors, any panelbeater who was working in the 60's/70's will tell you that many of them had perforated doors within 5-8 years. The story goes that HD sales were so strong in early 1965,even better than the EH,that GMH overproduced the panels for them and many ended up in storage for some time and exposed to moisture, and surface corrosion wasn't removed properly before the cars were assembled some time later, it took a while for them to be used up as sales fell off badly later in the model run when the model had to be quickly replaced by the HR. That damage looks like they might have been kicked in being so far up on the door though.

neville48, Oct 27, 5:52pm
Its an HR Holden ,half of the bog is probably factory, the other half was probably put in in the early eighties so it hasn't done too bad mate. that was the era of backyard panel and paint or "bog and flog", everyone was doing it. Not many HR's around now though so be sympathetic and check out the bones before you reject it totally.

grangies, Oct 27, 5:56pm
Yep. It's definitely crash damage that has be very roughly repaired.

The rest of the vehicle ( while rusted in certain areas ) is thin paint on top of fairly clean sheet-metal.

grangies, Oct 27, 5:57pm
GD!

Nope.

buyme3, Oct 27, 6:02pm
looks like a factory holden paint job. whats the issue! hope your not destroying a good bog job with a shooddy proper steal job!

andrewph, Oct 27, 6:17pm
If dig deep enough youll find the lid off the bog can. HaHa.

rob_man, Oct 27, 6:32pm
Looks like a lot of that will hammer out, whoever did the last repair must have had a weak left arm.

grangies, Oct 27, 6:48pm
Or no left arm at all. LOL.

The left front guard is quite funny. I've taken a lot more paint and bog out since the photo, and came across one heat shrink mark. Only ONE lol.

It's like they decided to to give it go at doing a reasonable job, then gave up.

The owner seems to be not short of $$ so I'm going to talk him in to getting the front guards soda blasted inside and out, then go from there.

Rare Spares also have full door skins available.

bigjerry, Oct 27, 7:12pm
Its a bloody good thing someone is prepared to rescue the old HR though mate. Also, that could have been some guy 10 years ago, the old backyard special, probably looked a treat when it was done the first time round ( loosely meant of course). Nah its good to see one saved, Even if they are the ugliest Holden ever built.

candy1213, Oct 27, 9:49pm
thats not bogits panel cream !, for old age wrinkles

richard198, Oct 27, 10:14pm
At least the bog stayed where it was put! I've not only seen worse than that, I've known car dealers insisting on bog over holes the size of dinner plates to save costs!

rpvr, Oct 28, 5:57am
Some years ago I worked as an admin guy in an assessing centre for a well known insurance company. We had a Honda CRX in, which was duly repaired and returned to the owner, only to have another prang within a couple of months, dislodging a large slab of bog about 7mm thick from the rear quarter. I still have a piece of it in my desk drawer so I can show people. So it's not only DIYers, professionals do it too when the insurance companies put the squeeze on.

hopie, Oct 28, 6:10am
I fail to see the problem, bog after all is your friend

rob_man, Oct 28, 7:35am
True but there is a point where it actually saves time to hammer stuff out a bit more before reaching for the spreader, same with bogging rust. Zapping a quick patch over a hole is often quicker than dicking around trying to sit bog on fresh air.

elect70, Oct 28, 11:58am
About average for a 45 year old holden is it a HD .wouldnt get new panels anyway & to cut & weldpatch panels would costas much as a newholden. They were a crap model anyway, now if it was aEH ------

kellrae, Oct 28, 12:41pm
Your not alone with a bit of excess bog this is of my escort

fiatracer, Oct 28, 2:00pm
keep grinding out the bog - I think you'll find it's actually an HA Viva

grangies, Oct 28, 2:01pm
The owner has agreed to a new skin for the left rear door.

Yay. LOL.

brokebloke1, Oct 29, 6:06am
ive just bought a mk1 capri and yes it has bog im rebuilding it slowly by beating the metal out and skimming with a light coat of bog, in some places the bog was 3/4 of a inch thick ( bloody cowboys )

lookoutas, Oct 29, 8:53am
Ya gotta get with the times pal.
Back in the 70's another door would cost about a hundy, while the tight assed insurance hourly rate was $5 (nothing much has changed there) So 8 hours was worth $40 and replacing wasn't an option.
Thanks to the Jappa influx, today a door is worth $150-250 cheap, and 8 hours at a still TA rate of $50, is worth $400. So now it's more viable to replace, whereas 40 years ago it was fix. Which means, not many people can fix now, and nor are we given the time to do it properly.

try new old car company aussie crowd for new panels they can even supply a brand new 69 comaro shell if you desire.
