Are these really necessary! I had a look at the cabin air filter holder behind the glovebox of my 2002 Honda Civic and there are none there.obviously the Honda dealer had taken them out before the car was sold.

No, not really, the driving public has survived up until now without them.If you are the type that suffers from allergies or would just like the interior of your vehicle to stay a bit more dust free then they are a good idea, they are mainly intended to be pollen traps.

I disagree, I have replaced mine 3 times in 3 yrs, approx every 30k, and am always amazed at the state of the used filter. The amount of crap it stops entering the cabin makes them worthwhile to me. The replacement ones do a much better job than the leaf catcher that was there previously. (FG Falcon)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they are really there to stop your air con/heater elements from clogging up. Maybe the dealers remove the dirty ones so the air flow coming from your vents is better.

Are the after market ones (Ryko etc) OK! I have found some Honda parts really expensive.

I doubt the dealer would have taken it out, probably never had one fitted at all. While I can't speak for honda, I know that toyota made a place for cabin air filters to go starting from around year 2000, but didn't actually start fitting them until the last 5 years or so. You may be surprised to know that ve commodores have a place for a cabin air filter but dont have one fitted from new, they just have a gauze type covering to stop leaves etc getting in - and the air filter is around $300 from memory and quite a job to fit!

our 2001 ipsum has one.our 2002 mondeo had one too. the funny smell in the car went away when they were replaced, so that was good. also a good idea to put a few drops of air freshener or scented oil on them to get that nice smell in the car without using those god aweful air freshener things which makes the car smell like a 16 old boy with too much lynx on.

Yes. Car manufacturers never used to fit them, but the filters stop your condenser coils from blocking up with crap, as well as other less important things. All commercial and domestic air conditioners (or heat pumps) have condenser coil filters which need cleaning or replacing periodically depending on its type.

yep. I bought one from the states for about $50 ,and fitted it. It stops the small grit coming into the cabin, and insects. I also had to buy them for my "Thai" accord as they are not fitted here. They use carbon impregnated ones overseas to stop the smell coming in.

when you see how mch crap they collect and particulates from deisel fumes etc then they are definitly worth it.$50 every 5 years or so isnt a big deal.
