Cracks me up how the locals can hit these roads/turns easily compared to the townees. That 47degree corner is the best! Fishtail that one hard, mean.

About as funny as it is when we cowpokes go to the big cities and get left for dead by all the locals that know their way around, the light sequences, lane choices and so on !

yep I agree, it's a pretty sweet stretch of road.

It never was, only in the mind of some little provincial publicist wanting to sell more petrol or pies to passing drivers.
If you are looking for a "main township" all you will find is a pub!

I like the signs "This is NOT a racetrack"

That's not true - it's the best motorcycle road in the country. And all the dickheads stop when they hit the gravel anyway.

is that tunnel still there/upgraded!. freaked me the f***k out when i was little. remember riding through there at night, when dad kicked me and my brothers out of the car (the usual backseat fighting lol) and made us walk it. walking through a hole in the hill, at night time, in the middle of nowhere plays havoc with the young mind. haven't been anywhere near that highway since lol.

The lost road is now in the Manawatu Gorge different to the Forgotten Road. Been through the Forgotten Road awesome drive. The finger sign that says Main St 360 metres ( or something like that) amused me, also the other sign that pointed to the Sailing Club. Great sense of humour.

is that what they call it!, lol
short end of a long journey home in a borrowed AP5 ( the lightest arse ended vehicle known to mankind) after dark by the time we got to the coast end, if I'd known what to expect I'd have either donned safari gear and taken a weeks rations before turning off at Taumaranui, or stayed on the national park road, but, no, had been behind a row of vehicles from 12mile junction all the way and caught a glimpse of Stratford on a sign so swung hard right the most enlightening 4 hrs of my life I tell ya, roads that turn 390 degrees and not pass over or under each other, single lane shingle where both back wheels are rubbing grass banks at the same time, hard rights into hills, a non sign posted tunnel, single lane and nowhere to go except back another 100 yards after reversing from the tunnel to enable a vehicle that staunched you into reverse can pass you the classic was seeing lights of civilisation below on that last hill, winding our way down the hairpins to meet a landcruiser towing what at first ( and second) glance appeared to bethe QEII, widest corner around, and the AP5 was 90 degrees to the road, headlights shining direct into and under that boat for it's full what appeared to be 1/2 hr as we drifted around that corner facing inward, rear wheels in the water table, fronts on the centre of the gravel spousal abuse wasn't such a big thing back then but do did my ears get a hiding, today someone would get charged and 12 mths for some of the things said that night silent trip from there to waverley - bliss

That road is one of my favourites, I have been driving over it for 20 years, 13 years in the same R32 Skyline. I like it best between midnight and 5am no missus or kids, full tank of gas and never on a full gut.

I remember taking the that route in the early 80's as a long haired hippy behind the wheel of a combie with a bunch of like minded friends, our sense of reality dulled some what after spending weeks in the South dishing out our home grown THC by the bucket load.we convinced ourselves were on some kind of mystical highway.lol.

Haha true.We need both so lets share.m- y old man nodded off 3km from Taumaranui 2 weeks ago and went off the road BUT it was one of the few places where there was a paddock next to the road and not a huge drop off so they were soooo lucky.Minor damage, bonnet, screen, both mirrors, scratches etc.AND one of the local rednecks pased in a ute as it happened and only slowed down to look but didnt stop to help to pensioners and see if they were hurt or could get back out. Fine folks down there.!

Hahaha. I've heard many old stories from the uncles about the "mystical highway". The driver, my (straight) aunty, had to put up with their stoner talk the whole way. She reckons they were worser than the one's who had taken a tab. oh the poor girl, that would've been a long drive.
