i just saw this mentioned in another thread,

i often hear of 'stage 2' this, and 'stage 3' modifications.

who decides what these 'stages' are! or is it just a bullshit term with no real meaning behind it!

You said it!

it must be real coz Need 4 speed has stage 1 2 and 3 turbo upgrades!

no it's not bullshit !
some hot up parts suppliers like to offer their performance up grades in different stages of tune & expence.
but these stages dont really cross over between different manufacturers.
therefore go in with ya eyes wide open
you still have to compare one against the other for value etc

Lots of meaning to us old farts when there was a lot of hot up gear available.

'stage 2' on a ROTARY in nz is a type of porting; it's a fat extend port that when accompanied by exhaust porting will give a small pulse, good torque, rev to 9k, and remain drivable.

Along with exhaust carb and dizzy mods.

From memory, In old fart time, stage 1 was a ported and skimmed head, possibly a straight through silencer and richer needles.

Stage 2 would probably be as above plus larger valves, more extensive porting, better exhaust manifolds, mild cam grind, possibly a switch from single to twin carbs or a twin choke weber.

Stage 3 as above with a wilder cam, probably twin webers.

Stage 4 was almost a full race engine with a cam that wasn't really suitable for the road, maybe straight cut gearbox etc.

For some people, stage 1 was a blueprinted engine and then they moved upwards from that.

Suspension and brake mods weren't usually part of the above, but were additional.

That is my approximate take on it, but as stated above, it did vary a lot and there was no standard.

Its entirely academic in the same way that the retards go on about "JDM" like its some type of 'brand'.

When referring to "stages" most people are talking about Gran Turismo.
