'Automotive archeology' books, who's read what!

attitudedesignz, Nov 12, 12:12pm
Hi all, i've run out of things to read (normally read 1-2 books a week) and i'm looking for suggestions on what to read next.

Just finished,

Hunting Warbirds: The Obsessive Quest for the Lost Aircraft of World War II (Carl Hoffman)

Own & read (motoring related)

The Hemi in the barn (Tom Cotter)
The Cobra in the barn (Tom Cotter)
The Vincent in the barn (Tom Cotter)
American outlaw (Jesse James, West Coast Choppers)
Iacocca: An Autobiography
All of Jeremy Clarksons.
All of James Mays.
Couple of Hammonds (find his a little hard due to the writing style)
John Brittens story
Burt Munros story
Sloan rules:
Alfred P. Sloan and the triumph of General Motors (David R. Farber)
My Years with General Motors (Alfred Sloan)

Yet to buy (& read)

The Corvette in the barn (Tom Cotter)
Rivethead: Tales from the Assembly Line (Ben Hamper)

So i'm hoping someone here has some ideas what to read next, i mostly like to read Bio's or Autobio's, don't like fiction.
If you've read some good (motoring related or even semi related) books please let me know.

attitudedesignz - I'd like to read those barn books but haven't seen any for sale down this way. We're poorly served by what passes for bookshops in this city.I do have a few motoring books especially Automobile Quarterlies which I bought a few of years ago.I enjoy one book titled Motor Car Lovers Companion edited by Richard Hough.Printed in 1965 it has articles written by all sorts of people on all sorts of car related topics. These include The Capricious Motorcar by the Hon C.S. Rolls,Lyons First Jaguar by Lord Montagu,Pursuit on the dover Road by Ian Fleming etc.It covers early motoring fashion, racing at Brooklands etc.Definitely worth a read if you can find a copy.My favouriet motoring book of all though is more of a picture book and rather read condition. It's called Illustrated Motor cars of the World by Piet Olyslager with an introduction by Jack Brabham. The thing I love about it is that all the illustrations are like those that used to be on cigarette cards many years ago.A huge range of cars, many of them virtually unknown.

Own & read an unauthorized autobiography of Henry Ford.
Brilliant no holds barred story of his beginnings to the end of his life.

Lee Iacocca , "An autobiography" & "Straight Talking"

Al 3 books a straight shooting/ no holds barred insight in to their lives

Thanks for the link.I could have looked them up but I'd really rather see one first then I'd know wether it was a writing style etc I'd be happy with.I've been happily hunting cars for a while now and it's amazing what's out there even now and I've only scratched the surface.I've taken lot's of photo's of wrecks or unloved vehicles which all appear on my Facebook page.Found 1 barn that had more than 1 Cadillac, numerous Model T Fords,Buicks,Dodge,Hudson,50&#-
39;s Fords,Minis and even a couple of S Cortinas etc.None of them are exactly lost but they turn up in the un likeliest places. It's great fun stumbling upon something new.

Yep.

And the Rats, Andy Priaulx, Murphs & all 3 of Steve Matchett's books.

Also Thrust SSC, Andy Greens book, Richard Bransons book, the Cuban guy who was boss of Coca-Cola, Ray Kroc (founder of McDonalds)

If i actually worked out what i HAVE read it would probably fill a small regional library lol.

the book on smokey yunick is apparently pretty good reading

Back From The Brink - Michael Edwardes
The Man in The White Helmet - (got mine on Kindle) White Stig
To Finish First - Phil Kerr - brilliant
Winning is Not Enough - Jackie Stewart
Life At The Limit - Graham Hill
The Other Side Of The Hill - Bette Hill

I realise my tastes might be different from yours but my 4 most treasured books are "ERA" - which I doubt you'll find anywhere (and the last one I saw sold on Ebay for about $1,000), and BRM 1, 2 & 3 by Doug Nye.

I have dozens of biographies and autobiographies.

You can't read "Racing Ray Williams" biography yet, 'cos I haven't finished writing it.

AC Cobra and others in the barm by Tom Cotter
A Farmers Affair by Duncan Monroe - I reviewed that on my site - Brilliant Book if you are in to Land Rovers
Trekka Book i Recommend as well - Lot more more research went into that then Webbo did on the Assembly industry in my opinion
