Trade your current car for an EL wagon would be my advice to you, why get a car thats 10 years older and smaller!Especially if you are going to be carrying a large animal in the back.Having driven a VL recently for the first time in ages I'd forgotten how small and relatively cramped those early Commodores are compared to Falcons.

As for buying a used VL rust is probably the most important thing you should look for, as well as cooling system maintenance, any examples with obvious rust around the windscreen especially should be avoided, they are expensive to fix properly and water leaks inside are a huge smelly nuisance as well as damaging to the floor etc.The legendary long life and strength of the RB engines doesn't need any further discussion but of course they are getting old now, anything with a dirty and rusty cooling system should be avoided, any oily feeling to the coolant run away now as the head is probably cracked.Get a good all round inspection done, especially of the suspension bushes, brakes, steering gear for deterioration and leaks etc, getting through WOF's in the future could be expensive if you get one thats not had much work done in this area.

xr6 wagons are reasonably rare

Yea there was an EL XR6 wagon that popped up here in Palmy a few weeks back that needed a new head gasket and minor other things sorted, 3k as is 4k fixed, didnt think that was too bad. Im hoping to go back to a manual, both our cars are auto and I just miss changing gears. That limits whats available in a wagon quite considerably especially when looking at engines over 2L

Personally, considering you are able to pick up a VN wagon for half what they're asking for the VL, I would go for the later unit.
I paid $1200 for one last Xmas, there was one on the roadside in Whanga recently for $1500.
Good luck with your choices.

One of my neighbours has a VL wagon, 3 litre manual with well under 200k on it, it's been parked up for quite a while, not rusty, only problem he has ever had was with brittle wiring to the likes of the AFM.Too far away to be of any use to you though.
