Also some shafts twist, sometimes it is better they twist than being too hard. there was a guy did up a viva that actually spun the axles DOWN for drag racing cause they kept breaking. Drew a red paint line and took them out after launching it over and over, sure enough the line did a full twist but it didn't break like before. Funny how things can work.

bugger, it broke again. Looks like we may not be able to run it this weekend unfortunately while we get the bugs out of it. I probably wont be able to get a proper one done before sunday.
On that topic, does anyone know approximately a driveshaft costs to have made!

morrie , there's a lot to making a shaft, you must use the right alloyed steel, m/c the spline, chamfer and radius every sharp edge, and heat treat and temper the shaft, read my previousposton this thread on finding the right lengthed shaft. a wrecker will have some good knowledge your biggest down fall in welding , is alloy migration in the molten pool zone ( you must use the correct electrode and no pre or after heat treatment. find out exactly what sort of steel your trying to weld and check on google / wiki pedia there we are ! that will give you something else to do today. it's all in the angle of the dangle.

why bother with such a conversion!

sorry MM but i buggersd up a part of my last post you must use proper electrode and you may need preheat and definately heat treatment after welding.

howat engineering in wellington will cut down respline and harden driveshafts

If it's not lending to welding then yeah cut and spline the end. About $175 if I recall! Forget

na, he's a drop kick

last ones I had made were done by GKN in the UK. Long time ago and the cost did not interest me. They were for an independent rear suspension using an atlas diff. the man paying the bills was happy with the price and we never broke one in two years of abuse.

I had a chat today to an engineer who can make up a driveshaft for me. I will find a unmodified one and if that doesnt taper to a thinner shaft in the middle then I can get it cut shorter and resplined on the end but if he cannot do that then he is capable of making a whole new shaft too but that will cost more.

seriously try howats in wellington they are pretty cheap and i know a fair few people running his axles that hes done and havent had any issues where as others ive seen where they have been resplined break

Heres a couple pics of the car. Obviously didn't run on sunday so I used the sentra this time, got 4/25 in the gymkhana and although no placings in the sprints, because the competition is things like WRX and proper race cars, I felt like I drove really well apart from one spin and a few were commenting on my smoothness.
Im just in the process of getting a few driveshafts so I can get them modified and have a spare just in case we blow up another. I have until January to get the car ready so I will have a bit of time to do some testing before it races.
Did I see right in that the shaft is hollow, maybe a high tensile center pin & weld it up again.
morrisman1,

nah its not hollow, the middle is just the butt of the shaft that didn't see weld.

I got a new driveshaft today, its getting shortened tomorrow. It will be fun stress testing this one!

hey morris , did you see the new boeing 787 on the news a couple of days ago ! did you notice any thing about the wings !
morrisman1,
Nov 15, 6:46am
wing, it had wings! I should be more observant!
Hmm, well the 787 wing has blended winglets which reduce induced drag even further than standard winglets but I didnt notice anything else
the-lada-dude,
Nov 15, 8:36am
did you not notice that the section thru the wing looked pretty much identical on either side of the cord line . mmmm. when is a wing not a wing . is the fuselage a wing ! there's a few angles you can attack this from .
morrisman1,
Nov 15, 11:06am
you must have awesome eyes to make that conclusion from a picture. I cannot be bothered arguing with you, I have already stated my opinion that there is a combination of Bernoulli's theorem at work and newtons laws of physics and you cannot disregard either. Seeing that the 787 does not need to fly upside down I would put a box of beer on the fact that it does not have a symmetrical airfoil as the wings.
oh an a fuselage is not a 'wing' but can be a lifting body.

thats ok MM i dont have an axle to grind ! and i agree about the beer
