Which Golf are you looking at i.e age or budget! If looking at a MK5 or later (model starting 2004) the Golf is unparalleled for economy/power and reliability is very good. VW parts are also very inexpensive in NZ as we have plenty of competition and Golf's are so popular worldwide.

I had one until about a year ago, extremely reliable (never had a problem in the 3 yrs I owned it) and compared to a lot of cars very ecomonic.

Its important to differentiate though between the likes of the MK4 and the MK5 they are, very very different vehicles.
The standard MK4 cars look smart and are lovely to travel in but still use a very reliable but old technology engine. This makes them fairly lackluster in the performance department but cheap and easy to maintain.Fuel economy is O.K but not particually wonderful. My suggestion if going MK4 is to go GTI, GT or GTX so you get the cracker 1.8 Turbo engine. Despite being the performance option the fuel economy is much the same.
If you can afford it though the MK5 is totally worth stretching the budget for. Its amazing 6 speed dual clutch transmission and class leading FSI engines are the complete opposite of the MK4 with not only class leading performance but economy so good from the 2.0 liter most manufacturers can't even match it with a 1300cc manual let alone an auto. You go from the back of the pack in terms of engine technology right to the bleeding edge of performance and economy. Interestingly though the extra technology does not make the car unreliable, quite the opposite.
While the MK4 was a lovely car there were other good options you could get. The MK5 though wipes the floor with the opposition, when the MK5 came out there was simply nothing in that segment that was even close to being as good for the money.
Also, remember the Audi A3 is just a re-packaged Golf in a different body shell, so its worth considering as well and is of course just as reliable and economical.

Snap! my point as well.

843 needs to remember that : this is fantasy - jazz is the only person on the entire internet making the claims he does
go to any VW forum & the OWNERS of these cars will say a different story
what Jazz says the 2.0 is capable of is better than what many 1600 FSI owners say they are getting from their mk5's

I'm looking at getting a Mk5 Golf wagon early next year. Was talking to a lady a couple of weeks ago with a Golf hatch and she loves it. Her husband has one too.

It depends on budget,you can get a gti Mk4 for say $9000,but a mk5 will cost say $ 19000.
thejazzpianoma,
Nov 15, 11:04am
Your a bit steep on that one. With a bit of care and some legwork you can get a tidy MK4 with reasonable km's from $5'000 and a MK5 from $13'000.

Yeah what would I know, we have only had 3 MK5 2.0 models in the family.
OP wrong2 is a resident troll, I won't be rebutting any more of his rubbish for fear of feeding him. You can choose to believe what I say or not, I really don't mind.

being a troll is what you call people who disagree with you !
how about you registering to the VW forums i have to ask the same questions about fuel economy that i have
would love to see you call all the responders trolls as well
i have yet to see anyone say their 2.0 FSI Golf is getting 21.5 km/Llike you are
basically you cannot be trusted to tell the truth - your too biased

for the record, Jazz's claims for the 2 Liter is as good /better than what 1600 FSI Golf owners are saying they get
