I have been asked to have a look at a Pug just to see if i can remedy its pinging underload, it was dropped off, and then i found out it has electronic ignition, no dizzy to advance/retard timing, so i looked about for a knock sensor as i thought this may be the problem, but I cant find it, so anyone able to tell me roughly were to find it! also, the plugs look fine but apparently on some pug sites the plugs can cause pinking ( its missing slightly so ill probably replace them soon anyways with a service ), anyone want to offer advice, or know if there is a common cause to this problem! Cheers

Knock sensors are always located in the upper side areas of the block just below the head gasket level , they have to be otherwise they don't work properly, if at all.It could be on something that old that it doesn't have one.I presume the correct grade of fuel is being used!

I wouldnt know, being a womans car ( a very girly girl ) Im sure she has others put petrol in the car, so she wouldnt know i dont think, Ill ask though, cant harm anything, Ill tell her to run 95-98 over 91 though as a precausion, and thanks for the general location of the sensor, ill be sure to actually jack up the car and look behind the engine tomorrow

Yep if you don't find a KS get some 95 in it if it hasn't already and see what happens from there.

I second the fuel idea, also make sure its fresh just in case the car has been in storage for a few months, that will make it knock.

Does it try to "run on" at all! Just wondering about whether it could be carboned up which will cause pinging. Does it seem to be running a bit rich or does it do almost all short runs! Manual Choke!

Anyhow, good to sort the plugs before you get too deep into it. Don't be put off by them looking good, Fiat 1.6's for example can have perfect looking plugs (looks like they went in yesterday) but if they have done the milage they still degrade performance noticeably.

Does quite a bit of km's but can also sit for a while, as she is an air hostess, so does travel a bit when she is here, but does sit about otherwise, she didnt know that anything was wrong until her father pointed it out, so its come to me to take a gander

Aha!
Do some investigation down this line. If its only got a bit of fuel in it drain it and start again. If its a full tank it might be worth asking more about how much it has been sitting lately and when it was last filled up.

Remember modern fuel only takes 3 months to properly spoil, especially in a partially filled tank.

ahh ok, thats real sad its that easy to spoil, odd though i was told it had been sitting at the fathers for over 3 months, but, the car started pinking and performing prior to that when it was being used heavily. Ill take it down to the workshop tomorrow and give it a scan on the scan tool aswell to ensure there are no codes :/

KS not always in the block.Renault Turbo models had them in the top of the head next to the top hose fitting so all Im saying is if its got a KS it could be damm near anywhere. Its French so it might be attached to the rear bumper LOL.

thejazzpianoma, Nov 19, 8:52pm
Well its not necessarily the fuel but its a very likely contender. Good to rule it out to start with, being an air hostess's car it may well have old fuel in it on a regular basis, so could even have been the reason for doing it in past.

I thought french cars didn't have them. you were just supposed to change down a gear if you started seeing ripples forming on the surface of your wine.

thejazzpianoma, Nov 20, 5:51am
Anyhow, once you have the basics out of the way I would perhaps then move on to checking whatever it uses as a crank position sensor. It may have been knocked or come loose.

Oh and no it does not run on, but does miss a little in park and neutral, while tapping the accelerator, but in drive it drives beautifully( surprised the handling and the ride quality was soo good infact ) but once it hits second gear its slows down a bit and starts pinking quite loudly , so yeah, Plugs, fresh 95+ and fix her stereo, and ill see what happens from there
