I seem to remember Pontiac testing solenoid valve actuation back in the 60's about the same time they developed the belt driven cam

jezz, i hope they were using non interferance heads ! in the 60's they were trying to stop the corvair killing people weren't they ! i'm trying to think of the name of that do gooding bastard that killed off the corvair.mmmmmmmmmmmmm. help me out billyou'll know.

Ralph Nader just for you cause you like Lada's and Ralph has yet to see one I think he is now a senator or congressman

ta bill , please don't dob me in ! that guy caused one hell of a ruckass over there. i think he had a barrow to push !( no, not a lada) if he's got a secret agenda, looks like he,s getting there

GREAT! Double the fail! ;)

LOL, thought you would like that!
Actually, the reality is the opposite, neither the belt nor the chain is particularly stressed in that setup so the km change interval is something absurd like 180'000km and changing the belt is stupidly simple as its much like doing an old single cam engine. The only think you can't get around is belt deterioration over time (not VW's fault) so you still need to do it every 4-5 years.

If they wentback to sleeve valvesand abandoned the poppet valve there wouldn't be a problem
bill-robinson,
Nov 21, 4:53pm
how do you propose to rive the sleeve valves from the crankshaft!
the-lada-dude,
Nov 21, 5:16pm
gear driven cranks bill , or rack and pinion or. actually toyboy3 all sleeve valve engines seem to be able to produce better power figures like for like. the last of the big english aero engines were s/v and produced enormous amounts of power. the napier sabre produced about 4200 hp ( mind you this was a compound engine ) but the big radials sure spanked the yankie shit . unfortunately there are so many buts with s/v they sorta died. you better help me out here BILL -Rcause i might be talk'n shit !

Good grief! If I ever meet the guy who designed all that, I would slap him. As for the make, looking at the camshaft ends, I would say Audi (the 4 rings).

the engine which is fitted to late model Lamborghini's I believe.

Nice spotting Lambo V10

i would consider this to be xtremely poor design. this is a poor mans so called performance engine. it looks like single row chain. running thru wearable guides, and running at crank speed. ( main chain ) can you imagine the noise and wear ! if a drafts man showed me that concept i'd kick his arse right out the door . unless the company was nearly broke and had to find a real cheap and nasty drive system.
budgel,

Virtually all camchains are driven from the crankshaft and run at that speed.
the-lada-dude,
Nov 23, 8:54am
if i have two chain sprockets one at 30'" diaand the other at 3" dia both turning at 1000 rpm is the chain speed the same !
steve312,

Chain speed on the bigger sprocket would be a hell of a lot faster for the same amount of revs. Since you have used inches as a measurement I would guess you remember the good old fibre gears on the orange Holden engines.Even gear drive cams had their issues.

ta steve, i was just pointing out to budgel that the chain speed on the lambo eng is running twice what i'd call normal speed as there is no reduction at the crank. most engines have a small crank pulleyvcam pulleywhich is 2x as big
bill-robinson,
Nov 23, 1:07pm
they have to, camshafts run at half crankshaft speed( except 1/4 speed camshzfts0
curlcrown,

most cars do have chains now.
steve312,
Nov 24, 9:14am
Chain speed on the bigger sprocket would be a hell of a lot faster for the same amount of revs.(in fact 10 times faster) (distance travelled per revolution is 94.24" for the 30" sprocket and only 9.42" for the 3") Since you have used inches as a measurement I would guess you remember the good old fibre gears on the orange Holden engines.Even gear drive cams had their issues.
