Bearing packer.do you use one!

Thinking about buying one to do a wheel bearing. With the cost of this bearing, I want it to be packed right.
I swung by ripco today, but they didn't have one, and supercheat doesn't list them in their website. These should be pretty easy to come by though.

I have one and I hate it. It takes ages to pack each individual bearing, but perhaps I am using it wrong. I wipe the grease in with my hands the old fashioned way now.

they work well, you seem to waste alot of grease with them though, the centre hole was to fill before it starts to pack the bearing,i gone back to the old way as well

Always done it by hand, Our workshop has one its still in its box in the drawer.

Maybe this is why they aren't so readily available! They look so simple that you would expect to see them in the $9.95 bin.

I too went back to the tried and true way. They would be good if you were packing bearings ALL DAY but the hassle of cleaning them each time, because they attract everything, and the grease you waste, its not worth it.

I'd agree with the others in that they aren't really that good, you can do it just as thoroughly by hand, its just a little messier and time consuming thats all.If you were doing them all day then by all means get one, for the DIY guy or girl who just wants to do their car/trailer/caravan whatever bearings once in a while, money is better spent elsewhere. If you still really want one, try Saeco or SKF or another specialist bearing supplier, they will have or will know where to get them.

I prefer to hand pack too - once raced a smartarse apprentice, and I was faster in the long run.I used to use one of those jar type ones that you press down on,it was pretty good because it had a lid.Don't use the 2 cone type with the grease nipple on top - 9 times out of 10 the bearing gets pumped up with chassis grease.

i use mine all the time no wastage as you use the grease left behindto put in the hub. would not go back to packing by hand,as my hands are always dirty! must be overworked!
