just replacing the gasket and spark plug seals at the moment and the underside of the rocker cover is pretty darn black, thankfully not too much sludge on the engine.
What can we use to clean it that won't do any damage!
TIA :)

Vitually any soft solvent like that, kero, turps, petrol, white spirits. If you're going to buy something, kero is the next best thing to degreaser. An engine brush helps too.

gt244Whatever you do. DO NOT try to clean up that sludge on engine top or. you'll end up with the red light o doom(engine light) -the sludge ends up in the sump and blocks the oil pickup. ditto the rocker cover.Make sure that every grain of goop is gone

Yep a few years back we had a customer that had taken the rocker cover off his SR20 primera and cleaned out all the muck from up top with a screwdriver and some diesel. life span of engine after cleaning - 15 minutes

Diesel.

Rocker Cover:
Clean it with diesel, I have found automatic trans fluid really softens up the gunk if you soak parts in it for a while first before solvent cleaning. Make sure anything you use is cleaned off before you put it back on.
Everything under the rocker cover: Just leave it well alone and do an oil flush after you have put it all back together if its dirty. As has been mentioned above if you chemical clean the top end of an engine all the gunk ends up in the sump sooner or later, which blocks your oil pickup or worse gets into your bearings wrecking the whole engine.

Do NOT do an oil flush.

Just out of curiosity, What were you pulling the cover off for in the first place! Make model!

Thanks guys, used petrol to clean the top - came out quite nicely. Gave it a good wash down afterwards. We didn't touch the top of the engine, figured one day we will do a proper flush.

Good stuff thanks for letting us know how you got on.

That's what i do, run some cheap stuff and get nice and hot before draining, then refill with decent oil and new filter.

Why!
Edit: I DON'T recommend using that cheap crap "oil flush" stuff in a 350ml bottle. I meant change the oil a couple of times, thats all.
