Keep motorcycle parking free - sign the petition!

WCC are reviewing the use of on-road motorcycle parking, which may include the introduction of fees / charges.

Do your bit by signing the "keep it free" petition: http://www.wellington.govt.nz/haveyoursay/e-petitions/ep/details/147 Even if you aren't a Wellingtonian - sign the petition. If parking fees for motorcycles goes ahead here, you can guarantee one council will set a precedent for other councils "justifying" fees to be a nationwide thing.

Here is a link to the policy: http://www.wellington.govt.nz/plans/policies/parking/pdfs/parking2007-09.pdf

The Policy was drafted September 2007 with an implementation timeframe of 3 - 5 years. The motorcycle section in question is on pg 28 which states:

"f. Review the provision for motorcycle parking, including investigating issues such as quantity of spaces, location, parking price and motorcycle parking provision in town and suburban centres"

PS: Kudos and credit to BRONZ for organising this.

I find it funny how the council will ticket you for parking on the footpath when they have previously admitted that there is insufficient bike parking and your not allowed to pay and display

generally if I do park on the footpath its out of the way and because I cant park on the street

The councils all need to take a trip to melbourne and check out how they treat bikers. They might find it a bit of an eye opener. Most biker friendly place i have been to.

I didnt know until this morning that bikes were not allowed to use car spaces even if they pay the same amount. Dispite the single drivers that take up a space you could park four bikes. Pity, would be nice to have a bucketload of bikes take up a few parks around the city for a week to make a point.

should have bike parking right next to the disabled parks!

Why do councils provide FREE parking to motorcycles. They could still have motorcycle parks but with small spaces each with their own meter. I know motorcycles reduce traffic congestion and use less fuel but so too does a Smart car or a Daihatsu and they pay the same parking fees as a Hummer.

chris_051, Jan 14, 7:48am
moot point they are still large enough to take up space at traffic lights and big enough to fill most of the allocated area in a parking space. You could fit a dozen bikes in the space 3 of those smart cars would take up. These sorts of small econo cars attract the most retarded drivers as well so I wouldn't be doing too much to try and get people in them.

if they start charging for parking, Im going to have a spare "parking" plate. then the pricks can issue all the tickets they want.

oldbaldgoat, Jan 14, 12:46pm
Where are you supposed to put a parking ticket on bike!
On your seat! With the wind wellington gets!

Petition signed.

Wellington likes to tout itself as a kind of mini Melbourne. Well I'm sorry, but when it comes to this and almost any other transport related issue, they're lightyears behind.

ola_bitchola1, Jan 14, 4:59pm
i think they will have another protest ride the likes of the acc one if they try to take it any further 500 bike spaces and over 1100 bike park in town every day

berg, Jan 14, 5:34pm
I'm keen. Will you be riding with us if it has to happen! I did the ACC ride and it was an amazing, once in a lifetime experiance.

ola_bitchola1, Jan 14, 5:44pm
oh hell yes i will be

planespotterhvn, Jan 18, 6:52am
imagine if bikes had to pay for parks.they may as well take a car space.

planespotterhvn, Jan 18, 6:54am
Its probably Multinational utility asset grabber "Wilson's Car Parks" putting pressure on the councils to grab the scooter and M/Cycle market as well as cars.

planespotterhvn, Jan 22, 2:38pm
why has wilson's been able to grab vacant land caused by demolishing earthquake damaged buildings in CHC!

akkadian, Jan 22, 3:11pm
Just have you plate held on with wingnuts then put it under your seat when you park.No plate, no ticket

xs1100, Jan 22, 6:23pm
yeh thats a good idea akkadian and then you can get the no reg displayed tkt also, they can track you down thru chassis number on your steering neck if they really want parking plate lot easier

trogedon, Jan 22, 8:45pm
I got the tickets wedged between the seat and the tank.

unideck, Jan 26, 11:46am
Thats the problem Trog, people like to pinch them :( I leave them in the map pocket in the tank bag on the Hornet but still a risk. I parked at the airport the other day and it was free, guy said just pop it at the side of the office :) good man. What you riding Trog!
