How big's the trailer!

"more than 1.25 metres on either side from the centre of the trailer."

well i know that we can cart up to 3.1 metres wide, but must have headlights on and over width flags, over that we need a pilot, pretty much if its wide you become a cop magnet too!

The answer you want is 2.5 meters, anything over and its over width so you will need flags etc up to 3.1 meters.

Not really sure but Im assuming you are probably talking about car trailers so here is some info on car trailers some of the same basic rules apply, if you scroll through you will see the part about loads sticking out beyond the trailer.

Thanks, I am looking at a grain silo 2.8m diameter, but have to tow it from Dargaville to Whangarei behind a Mitsi Canter, it weighs about 1.5 tonnes, dont know if its worth the effort. But a carrier charges a B. fortune.

This site is only a summary you could go to VTNZ, AA ect and get "Fact sheet 53" for more detail as it has size graphs showing width/foward distances ect, way to much for me to explain here.
As the others have said 2.5m to 3.1m you need flags on 4 corners of load and headlights on low beam during the day, at night you need reflective hazard panels with a light on them on 4 corners of load, Do NOT use a "OVERSIZE" sign for loads UNDER3.1meters wide.
For loads OVER 3.1 you need to include a certified class 2 pilot with "WIDE LOAD FOLLOWS" sign on vehicle with headlights on, and the truck now needs a "OVERSIZE" sign on the front aswell as the flags ect. May also need a overwidth permit aswell.

Not really sure but Im assuming you are probably talking about car trailers so here is some info on car trailers some of the same basic rules apply, if you scroll through the first link you will see the part about "loads overhanging the vehicle or trailer". Loads must also be "indivisible" which means they can not be reduced in size or loaded differently to reduce the width. So no loading things side by side and calling it a wide load.
