Havnt got the heads here, said that in the original post, done a bit more research and the reliefs go towards the valley/intake, Mystery solved (i hope lol)

Looks like they should be at the top.
Just checked my BB, but that's really not positive help. But lets face it - imagine the required shape of the head if the indent was at the bottom!

Err, pushrods go up near the inlet, rockers cross the head, valves are on lower/outer side of head. is that right!
It's been twenty years(actually, it will be nearer thirty) since I saw under a chev head but if my thoughts are correct then the valve is near the outside and angled inwards. so the cutout would need to be on the outside of the block.
I think you need to get your heads and check for sure before putting them onto the conrods.
