Overheating

forrest39, Dec 6, 6:47am
drove a cartoday.I knew that it's gearbox is on the blink (auto) as it was not changing up to third. first to second and back was fine. I drove for about two kms at 20-30kmph.Question is; if I drove this slow for this long and kept revs to a minimum so as not to over rev, would this explain the rusty colouredwater pissing out of the bottom of the motor!

No you should not expect a modern engine to overheat unless there is something wrong.

The water being rusty colour is a giveaway, if the antifreeze has not been changed in a long time it can become corrosive and eat away at steel and rubber components. The radiator is possible blocked or partially blocked with material that has dislodged and the cooling system may be operating at a low efficiency hence the overheating.

If it is a car you were test driving the dont buy it, if there is corrosion of cooling parts then they are bound to fail one by one

thanks for that.its a 93 and the water wasnt fully rusty but had a tinge to it. worth getting checked out! or get rid of it! i have aquired it already.

Nope.
But a pressure tester will answer the question very quickly.
pop in to a radiator place or garage and get the colling system pressure tested-chances are the leaking water pump you replace to stop the!the rusty colouredwater pissing out of the bottom of the motor!!
WILL be cheaper than the engine you cook when ALL the water.exits.
out of the bottom of the motor!

A '93 what! A Ferrari! Anyway, do what's cheaper. Most of the time cars are worth repairing.

i dont and wont pretend to know what to do but the pressure testing sounds like the answer i was looking for.is it just a matterof hooking something onto somewhere on the motor or is it quite involved.ie mechanics time = money.not being a scrooge just wondering

93 merc 4 cylinder.just been revinned with 140 on the clock so thinking it may be worth it.quite like the car

does the fan work!if not then that could possibly be a cause over heating at low speeds.

if the water is rusty though i'd suggest either a choked up radiator / block / thermostat or a water pump with no / few pump blades on it

forrest39, Dec 6, 7:37am
fan seems to be working well
started it just now from cold and gave it a few revs for about 3-4 mins without overdooing it and heated up to 80 degrees prettyquickly.dunno if this is normal but!so is this pressure test lenghty or real simple!

Yip-simple as remove cooling system cap-and fit tester and pump it up-and look for the leaks.
And yeah dirty water and merc and water pump sounds like the
area where the money goes.

Someone is trying to offload a lemon onto you dude, both of those issues are potentially very serious and expensive, rusty water is always the sign of long term neglect at best and possibly head or head gasket problems at worst, a water pump failure may well be what your leak is an its probably just the first thing that has let go.If the rest of the car appears good you should get it along to someone whos a recognised expert on these (preferably an MB agent) or at minimum an auto trans/radiator specialist who can check it over and get you an idea of what you might be up for.

forrest39, Dec 6, 7:44am
yeah thats sounds like the go.cheers

r15, Dec 6, 7:52am
or just buy something japanese, at least plenty of people have the skills / knowledge / parts in stock, the parts will usually be cheaper and the car is less likely to break in the first place.(generalisation, there are plenty of jap lemons too)

mm12345, Dec 6, 10:13am
Heaven forbid. A 93 MB with rusty coolant, overheating, and a rooted A/T.You "acquired" it!
For your sake, I can only hope that means you stole it.

ceebee2, Dec 7, 1:59am
I wouldn't have touched that no matter what the make. Cut your losses and quit it unless you have too much money burning a hole in your pocket. That's the tip of the iceberg I bet.

elect70, Dec 7, 2:19am
I assume its a 190 E .Dontquit it until you have had the problemscorrectlydiagnosed,no 1will buy itlike that except wrecker . Autoprobably just needs a fullservice,

swannie3, Dec 7, 4:24am
Daughter's car had auto probs, brought it to me, it heated up on the way, so she kept putting more water in to get to my place.By the time she got there the trans fluid was darn near overflowing as that's where all her water was going, and the cause of her trans issues.Wrecker getting a cheap car, wasnt worth us spending any money on.

run some radiator flush through it abt $13 rinse the system out untill cleanish water then wack in a heap of bright green anti freeze. do youself a favour and clean the engine. now when it heats up see how far back you can follow the green water. if its a crack in the block you can use chemi weld that stops most leeks
