Alright so I'm polishing the 304's alloy covers. I've wet sanded the front one down (it was the worst) down to 2000 grit and have been polishing. Now I know I can get it pretty good looking using things like Autosol polish, I've used it before to get pretty much mirror finish on runners. However it's not cheap.
I've used one waterbased cutting compound with a calico polishing wheel and had a good result, as good as the autosol, tried some others that were crap. So any secret sauce to use on the aluminum to polish it that people know of!

I use a big puffing wheel on a big bench grinder and use polishing blocks, forgot the name but can be purchased from mitre 10, the blocks come in diffrent compounds, best stuff I have ever used

I've used toothpaste to polish a motorcycle tank.(bike, motorbike, whatever you prefer to call it). It was bare metal & I had it clear coated.
