From having spoken to other people who have been in that situation, I gather that it's best to be paid up and have nothing outstanding against your name in order to avoid proceesing delays on arrival. This sort of stuff is usually on the computer systems these days, and my guess would be that it may surface when you try to re-enter.On the other hand, you may like to check further with their system over there as it may even be as easy as pay on arrival. Not sure what is actually correct, just passing on what I have been told by others for what it's worth.

do you got a australian driver license! as i cant see how you could get demerits on a forgein license . and how can they send you a fine did you give em your nz adress!

I rented a car which you give them your NZ license numberand address etc. I doubt they can apply the demerits to my NZ license that probably is just a generic thing , seems strange Ive never heard anything backno reminders or anything ,

I have heard they do remember, get it done now before you leave.

surprising that you haven't gotten another letter with penalties added eh. Just pay up and then you don't have to worry about it when you head to Sydney. Are you going to be using a rental car again!

OMG, ring them up, the penalties are HUGE if you don't pay, it's probably at least doubled by now.Strange though about the demerits cos they can't take demerits off a NZ license.I'm sure they will have you on file somewhere though. They are so tough over here, my husband didn't fully stop at a stop sign last week, and got an instant $300 fine and 3 demerit points taken off him!
Although being interstate and intercountry, not sure what the story is.

i would take the recipt of payment with you as proof that it was paid. the australians have a far better system of tracing and policing then Nz . my mate forgot to degrgo from the dole when he came to nz 2 days laterhis ex wife calledhe got a letter about leaving the country and trying to still get paid the doll. and that he would be in breach of blabla bla warning.

Wouldn't the rental company have paid it and billed your credit card! After the 28 days reminder or whatever it is! Plus stuck you for an admin fee or something!

AhHa I rang them up to see whats what , no they don't pick you up at the border however if i were to visit Tas and try hire a car it would come up , they never chase you the amount just keeps clocking upso my $110au fine from Feb last year is now $175au not bad , the points don't mean anything to my nz license. Interestingly they do access your NZ license details so when i rang Tasmaniafrom my land line they answered with whats your birth date and then she read me back my address and name etc . So I guess i better pay it before it gets any bigger

Usually the rental company pulls it out of your credit card since they have the details most of the time

You've done the crime so pay the fine. Last thing we want is for Kiwis to have a bad rep in Aussie!
