A 4 way stop is exactly the same as any other crossroad if none of the centrelines run through the intersection except that you must STOP before entering the intersection. If turning, give way to all traffic not turning. Otherwise give way to all vehicles crossing or approaching from your right. Anyone who has a problem at an intersection like that should immediately have their driver's licence cancelled because they're dangerous.

Was Victoria for the trams I understand not all of Australia. I came from Perth and had never heard of this crazy rule till I came here and freaked out my wife a few times(who is a Kiwi)

The only problem is, most of the sheeple are so used to having controlled intersections provided to make it easier for them almost everywhere, that when they do encounter an uncontrolled one they've got no idea what the rules are.

In the real world almost every single such intersection is controlled by a stop or give way.

There are still plenty of uncontrolled intersections around. And all the GIVE WAY signs at T-intersections or cross-roads (where one road is a through road) will be redundant after 1 March.

Only thing is, that rule will no longer apply! Even if the exits are controlled as you say, the code says that the right of must be "given", not "taken". Unfortunately, too many drivers will just drive across you without a care in the world! It's going to fun in March!

And what if everyone is wanting to go straight through the intersection!
richard198,
Dec 9, 10:26am
Are they actually going to remove all of those signs! (They would have to, or the sign would still apply!)
richardmayes,

He who dares, wins.
crzyhrse,
Dec 9, 10:35am
Probably not. But whether they're there or not who gives way is still the same. However, the problem I envisage is that the majority won't realise this.
crzyhrse,

You give way to the vehicle approaching from your right, as per what I said.
vtecintegra,
Dec 9, 10:38am
Which means you can get a situation where everyone is giving way to someone.

Works just fine in the US. I guess they're just smarter and less arrogant drivers than most NZers.
richardmayes,

Yes, and then he who dares wins.
The only crossroads I know of that is four equal stop signs, is Abel Smith St vs Cuba St in Wellington. People seem to figure it out, even though it's the middle of student Bohemia and there are pedestrians spilling out of the Southern Cross bar, etc etc

Yeah in practice it works okay. In theory it doesn't work at all.
Better than this horrible intersection where half the people seem to ignore the give way signs and the other half give way no matter what. You also have the pedestrian crossings and buses which cut corners to contend with. http://g.co/maps/3v6v6

Yeah, I've been there and observed! It's all about who has the nerve to pull out first. Usually, the other three drivers are relieved to not have to worry any more and wait their turn.

Oh christ yes, but they are absolute lunatics out there.
I Last month I did a U turn in that intersection so that I could go back and parallel park in Moxham Ave, over the road from the Fish & Chip shop. No traffic in sight - apart from two boys in a car miles away up Waitoa Road, who eventually turned into Moxham and then for some reason tooted their horn at me as they passed. (I had parked by then.)

Unless the car to his right also dares a splitsecond later.

Been there, and no it doesn't, which is why they are supposed to be phasing them out. As above, if all four are traveling straight through, it's an impasse. Obviously, as you've indicated, all it takes is a little courtesy and things move on, but whoever thought it would work still needs a kick. All it needs to fix it is make two of the adjacent roads different 'levels' ie one a give way and one a stop.

ha! I didn't know this. people seem to stop directly in front of me anyway at those intersections.
