Kaz - issues revving up. . . wont happen

tigertim20, Dec 8, 7:55pm
same engine I put together in my other thread. Got it all back together, when I test ran it it seemed fine. assembled all the rest of it, and took it for a test ride up the road. It will rev fairly freely up to about 12k rpm (redline at 19krpm) then, it wont rev any higher, It gets to 12k or so, then it, well its like it's hit a limiter.
One suggestion in float level, i.e. float might have stuck up/ (carbs were removed and it is possible that they were left upside-down somewhere, garage is shared by a few people).
I really dont wanna pull it all apart again right now, But I guess I will have to, so I am wondering if there are any other ideas I should look at while Im at it. I dont like having to do a job twice!

Any ideas appreciated.

or those who didnt catch the original thread, the engine is a 1993 Kawasaki ZXR250. In line 4, 4 stroke.

Is this bike an unknown quantity! Have you ever seen it running or did you acquire it as a non-runner!

John .
Apparently not in a thread started by Tim recently

;-)

take it apart again, and check for wear and your clearances again.
i had this problem once, but kept going.
end result was 2 legs out and melted fairing.

Look for vacuum leaks in the piping to the each of the slides, a small leak will stop the slide retracting all of the way on an open throttle.

tim--does it rev out in the lower gears! -there is a rev limiter also how clean is the air filter!Did you used compressed air and make sure every spec of dirt was out of the main jets

Hi Kaz.
The engine has the same issues regardless of gear. It wont rev out in nuetral either, though it will rev a touch higher than when in gear. The higher the gear, the lower it seems to want to rev.
When the carbs were removed, they werent dissasembled, so it shouldnt be shit in the jets.

I suspect at the momment that at some point the carbs were upside down while laying around, and a float has stuck or something, - So i think one cylinder isnt getting fuel causing low revs. Since I have to pull them off i willwhip the jets etc out too and have a look at that.

for those who asked, the engine is known. it was ridden into the garage for a cam chain, which has been done. aside from a rattling cam chain, the engine has been fine, seeing about 50km a day 5 days a week as a commuter without any issues at all.

found the issue, removed tank and airbox, and found a hose with a broken clip that had wriggled off. zip tie, reassemble, and sorted!

revving out propperly now!
