To be fair, he was the sober driver, he simply fell asleep at the wheel.It doesn't make him innocent by a long way, but it's not like he necessarily deliberately flouted the law.
His insensitivity after the events, well, stupid teenage bravado but not a crime.We all look back at things we said or did in our youth and cringe.
I think the sentence is reasonable for the crime.
Edit to add: this sentencing is in regards to the van crash, not the subsequent one.

A dumb arse kid for sure. I guess he stayed out of jail because it appears that he was sober at the time of the accident.

I guess we can only hope that no-one else will be involved when he crashes the V8 ute.

(Every once in a while, something makes it onto the news that I know a bit about through my professional capacity. It is on these occasions that you truly realise how half-baked, inaccurate, un-balanced and sensationalised the news media is. All this is my way of saying, it is a HUGE call to criticise a Judge of theHigh Court based on a Stuff article that was probably banged out in about 20 minutes! I have met two High Court Judges and they were both head & shoulders above your average Joe Thick.)
