Crash tonight '57 Chev coupe vs '60s Camaro

trogedon, Dec 9, 8:40pm
Both mint resto rods. The Belair is blue/white roof and the dark green Camaro is a conv. It happened right in front of us as we were in Huapai watching the Kumeu parade which they were part of. The Chev's throttle must've jammed as it sped up behind the Camaro. I thought this is strange as the '57s front wheels were on full lock and the front wheels had also stopped turning but the car kept plowing on and bashed the Camaro's right rear bumper. The '57 guy then turned it off. There seemed to be no damage to the Camaro (not that the '57 people checked) but the kids on it were justifyably upset. The '57s light was broken and guard a bit buckled and pushed back. They got it unjammed or whatever and kept going. It could've been much worse if they'd driven into the crowd. It was one of those "Is this really happening!" times followed by "Oh no.!"

Reads like thankfully people who are !Drivers! and not just steerers.
Young guy in high powered rice rockets don't have the experience to lock it up and turn the key off quick enough.
And yeah-acellerator springs can and do break-hence why 2 are required for racetracks.
And some older *8*'s with solid linkage can break an engine mount and allow the motor to lift up and jam the throttle.
happens quick.

This happened during a parade! That could go really wrong really fast. Good thing there was Camaro to plough into though.

Neither did this guy, he hit the car in front.
First thing he should have done is whack his gear stick into neutral.

Easier said than done. The rx7 with the 327 chev did this once. Standing on the brakes didn't even really slow it down and the old TH350 trans takes a second to unload, when it was all over the trans unloaded but by then the killswitch was just being flipped.

Me scoot has two throttle cables.throttle on,throttle off.if the spring breaks the throttle is returned manually.

Um these be REAL engines-not rice rockets with rev limiters.
Hapenned to me in an XA with a rather warm 351 shift kitted C4 and the ole solid linkage on gravel .gets a bit BUSY very QUCKLY-key off on full throttle slows em down pretty quickly with a full brake boot in

yep, done that myself (in my younger days).Being a bit of a di%& in a multi storey carpark and the throttle jammed open.Jammed on the brakes and turned off / slammed into neutral.XA with a fortunately relatively tired 302 C & C4 & crappy stromberg carb on it (before I started modifying !).These only had a single return spring on the carb.I had a good look at it, but couldn't figure out why/how it had jammed.
Fitted dual return springs shortly after that.Slamming it into neutral is fine and well, but if the throttle IS jammed, you will do a **huge** over rev very quickly if you don't turn the ignition off first.

Hey snoopy - hows things! Got yourself another XA yet! or upgraded to a Holden ;-)I'm without a V8 for the moment & probably a long time now, and XA Coupes are too much $$$ now anyway.

Had accelerator cable fray & jam in the bucket, smoke off front tyres trying to stop & back tyres from spinning, luckily Id had an isolator fitted earlier for drag racing (easier reach than the ignition) & shut down before we hit anything (was already planning for the gap between the car in front & the curb/powerpole etc). Made sure after that refitted cable, sleeve, firewall fitting was replaced with a smooth curved motorbike style unit. no issues after that but it sure happens quick when its out of the blue

I've thought when I get my classics back on the road I'd have a kill switch fitted (and a fire extinquisher) as there's so much at stake.

Yep happened in the F100 too many people in the cab and long legs everywhere and one leggy put one leg on the accelerator without realising and off we went full on big block verses brakes etc, panic, yell, swear, key .all sorted.we were that close.
