Am I being scammed!

philltauranga, Jan 31, 9:49am
I have a car listed on here and today I recived this txt on my phone.

"I want to know if your vehicle is still up for sale as i am intending to buy it right away. Please email me on ange.peter.ect."-
;

I dont want to put the email up incase it is legit. The phone number they txt from is very strange its a mob. then 000000 which when I tryed to ring operator said the number isnt availble! I txt back but no reply, they also didnt email me at all only the txt. It smells of a scam to me but Im only new to trade me so dont know what to look out for. What do you guys think of the phone number Ive never seen a 02--0000000 number! seems strange! to me.

It's almost certainly a scam - ignore it.

Scam is written all over it

can i have his email address!

bigjerry, Jan 31, 6:36pm
what would the racket be though! i mean it sounds dodgy but i cant get my head around the racket.

They "pay you" through paypal then file they never got the goods after they have hastily organised a pickup so they land up with the car and a refund, free car. The paypal account folds and the car goes off to be scraped or whatever.

There are variations but there is the jist.

ah right. paypal. never used it. i hand over cash, the dude hands over the product or vice versa. its the best system, been around for ages.

Paypal is fine I use it for purchases overseas all the time, but the key is fraudulent use. Paypal alone is not a scam. Much cheaper getting parts from overseas that are a nightmare to find here. So yea paypal is not always bad, basically just your common sense.

i got a call today for a pre purchase inspection from this number, 0014805105320, call from internet and the guy lives down town Auckland not sure if the text would have the same number

socram, Jan 31, 8:22pm
0014 is an overseas number isn't it!

Scam, scam, scam, scam, scam, scam - apologies to Monty Python.

Some people do use skype to text and call people. Just if they say something like "Gooooooooooood afternoon madame, I am calling about the monies from the the barnk of Nigeria"

incar., Jan 31, 8:39pm
but i meet this guy, did inspection, paid, end of story.

the 000000 number is a call from skype through a computer, could be legit, email him and if he wants an agent to pick up the car or paypal then generally a scam, I'd say 50/50 at this stage

Thanks for the advice guys Im quite new to computers and trade me so the help is appreicated. Ive decided to ignore it because they didnt just email me which seems strange as they wanted me to send the first email. Also a Trade Me team member rung me up after seeing my thread and said it would most likley be a scam.
