anyone know where i can get an original flat head v8 fora 1957 simca and gearbox 3speed colum change

ckd.bu.mopars, Jan 29, 8:01am
there was one in the latest petrolhead mag,not sure of the year or if it had a box, think they were asking about 2k for it.

rob_man, Jan 29, 8:25am
That was the V8 60 engine originally made for the British market. They sound quite convincingly like a proper V8 but are rather slow.

jokerboss, Jan 29, 8:28am
I know where there is one of those - has been sitting in a junk-yard for umpteen years.

Some in my area Might be aware of Wilf Boyd!

rob_man, Jan 29, 8:39am
A lot of those engines went into midgets, they are below the capacity limit.
Not certain but a V8 Pilot gearbox might do the trick, they were column change.

rob_man, Jan 29, 9:00am
Not sure of the capacity of those, I checked out those links from Hotrodpete but didn't see it mentioned. My brother is the flathead guy and I'm pretty sure he would know.
I think the size limit for midget cars is 200 ci for cast iron blocks so they must be less than that.

rob_man, Jan 29, 10:44am
I'm probably wrong in #10, The size limit for alloy midget engines is 166 cu in, maybe cast iron is 180 cu in.
Anyhoo. pete's link gives the V8 60 as 143 cu in. Bloody tiny, roughly 2.4L.
A n/a diesel makes more HP nowadays.

jsbike, Jan 29, 11:03am
an na diesel made more power than that years ago lol

afer_daily, Jan 29, 12:57pm

lookoutas, Jan 30, 6:15am
There's a car yard in Hunterville full of oldies. I stopped for a look at New Year and there was a Simca in there. Only stopped cause I saw it on the why through on Xmas eve, and thought it was a MkII Z - very similar shape.
I think it was one of the V8 models, but once i realised what it was, I wasn't interested in that car any more. Did take a photo but my bloody phone got too clever.

squidley88, Feb 1, 6:53pm
thanks again looked at the one at hunterville 3 grand for a pile of rust a bit over the top i think was gonna offer him a c ouple hundred but justdecided to walk away

lookoutas, Feb 1, 9:23pm
3 grand!

ab095, Feb 2, 6:25pm
I though they had a Ford flathead V8 in them! Called a Vedette, remember them from my childhood, looooong time ago!

lookoutas, Feb 2, 6:50pm
Jeez - that's created some rattles in my head.

rob_man, Feb 2, 7:19pm
A french copy of the V8 60, check out some of the links in this thread, some interesting stuff.

skin1235, Feb 2, 8:18pm
+1 for the name, but they were an ali block, may have been ford design from their patterns but definitely an ali block, and ford didn't do ali back them

edit so I checked some of the above links and find THEY ARE CAST IRON BLOCKS with ali heads and valleys, perhaps that was what I remember them for, some of the earliest ali head, and flatheads at that
and unless I cannot count that ozrodders link shows it to have a 17stud head, anyone wnat to try and confirm that, I know about 19 stud, and 24 stud flatties but 17!

movnon, Feb 2, 9:40pm
actually (same engine, V8 60) they were an option in some '37 Ford pickups (USA). Don't know why though.

skin1235, Feb 2, 10:51pm
would you believe I used to drive a 21 stud canadian sedan cut down to a ute from Auckland to Wanganui every friday after work then back again every sunday evening - for nearly 12 months ! back before I married the cause of such madness and took her to Auckland, lol
mid winter national park at 12.30am, aluminium steering wheel, cable brakes, 3 speed box and I recall 690 13! or 14 wire spoke wheels, swear it was often 6 below freezing, pair of socks on my hands to ensure they didn't freeze and lose feeling on the wheel
this would be in '69 and '70 and no heater in the cab, can't remember if it had vacuum wipers or electric but do remember the ever present fog through the center and waikato on the return runs ( always late leaving so hamilton was usually 2,30am or later)
then work all week to buy more gas to do it again next weekend
the madness and folly of young lust huh
